Hi!
Here's my equipment setup and settings to access POP/SMTP via
VoiceStream iStream (GPRS), findings and questions are presented at
the end.
Devices:
- Ericsson T39m mobile phone
- Handspring Visor Edge (PalmOS)
- Red-M Bluetooth springboard module
(BT ver. 1.1 so should do WAP over GPRS)
E-mail clients:
- Ericsson T39m built-in POP/SMTP client
- Eudora Mail for PalmOS
POP/SMTP service providers (SP):
- SP1 only provides remote POP
- SP2 provides remote SMTP via port 25 and an alternate port
Settings:

** E-mail Client Configuration (general) **
POP server: use server's IP# instead of server name
SMTP server: use server's IP# instead of server name
- SMTP server must allow remote access
- My SMTP provider offers an alternate port to work-around port
blocking
- In Eudora, I append the alternate port to the SMTP IP with a colon
(i.e., "IP:port" like "218.045.567.345:8952" for example)
Findings:
With Eudora Mail, I can do POP and SMTP, no problem.
With the T39m e-mail client, I can do POP but SMTP has been failing
today, finds the SMTP server but fails, don't understand why. SMTP on
the T39m has worked for me before. I just don't get it.
Next steps:
Work on a setup with DNS numbers, either I've been doing something
really wrong with my DNS settings or VoiceStream's DNS servers are
screwed up.
Once I have DNS sorted out, I hope the rest should be easy...
- WAP browsing on PDA
- HTML/cHTML browsing on PDA
Any advice would be really appreciated.
