Mobile phone and sunlight!? |

Right i'm heading down south this weekend, and i've got Traffic-i installed on my phone so i want to be able to use it! So i bought a cheap car phone holder with suction cup at one end for attaching to my cars windscreen (don't want to get collared by the law for holding my phone in my hand!). It all looks quite swish, a lovely mix of cheap mobile phone holder and SE P800!
My only concern is temperature! The phone is only inches away from the windscreen! Is there a risk of overheating? i.e. will it get cooked? If there is a risk is there anything i can do to keep the phone cool but keep it in its current location (nicely to the side of line of sight). i.e. fabricate it a wee hat? |

with the weather we are having at the moment you will probably have the Aircon on if you have it or turn the cold air on and turn your vent up to your windscreen as though you were demisting it. the mobile phone holder should shield the back of your mobile, if not too much sunlight might damage the camera lens.

well ive heard SE do some really nice sun-shades for the p800, coupled with and a hat and a little parasol to protect it in times of hot weather.....
i suppose the only way to stop the sun shining through your car window is to do a tribal rain dance thus preventing the sun to shine anymore....

Put it this way - **you'll** be damaged long before the phone gets damaged (hmmm...the operating spec temperature for the phone...ahh, here it is -15oC to +55oC - the dash might get close to that temp, but certainly not the phone as it's the wrong colour).
If you leave the phone in direct sunlight for hours and hours on end, over a long period of time, you may notice some discolouration, but for what you're doing, you'll be fine I have no doubt!
Steven.

Braw, i thought it would be ok, but its always worth checking!
It won't be in the sun for more than 3-4 hours anyhoo, i'll have to stop for a lav break or a scan break anyway! |

My t68i has crashed and frozen up in this heatwave twice so far(clock still on screen but pressing buttons dont do anything)and i had to put it in front of a fan one time and hold outta the car window the 2nd time just to cool down but i really thought it had died, thought i mention this:-)

I wouldn't worry about your phone getting hurt by a little sun. It won't get cancer. : )
However, if you live in Arizona, like me or a similar area where the temp can reach 120F in the shade you definitely don't want to leave your phone in the car (it can easily reach 180F inside the car). If you do, your phone might not be the same shape when you come back to the car. One of the joys of the AZ summers "your car doubles as an incenerator" and the metal part of the seat belt can just about brand you.
About the camera lens being hurt by sunlight I doubt it. It's a CCD (or is it a CMOS) sensor it's not tube based. |

hmm bad news
recently i been sitting in the sun with the laptop and the p800 just incase i get calls/msgs etc
noticed a bit too late, there were specs on the phone, which i ignored thinking it was just dirt. it ended up being small bubbles caused by the heat/sun
i later noticed they had expanded very little but noticable. good thing i got rid of it and got another |

Oh dear, I guess I'll just have to chance it, the trip is tomorrow, assuming O2 GPRS is actually working. |

its a bit cloudier at the moment (tomorrow that is) so you might be OK. we will all be thinking about you tomorrow and praying for some cloud cover for your journey. let us know how you get on and dont run up a big gprs bill

akashj: Were the bubbles on the screen or the case?
If you are right and these were caused by the sun then Sony Ericsson really needs to make the P810 more durable. Even though most of us might protect the phone more than ourselves (hey, we heal the phone doesn't) we shouldn't have to.
It doesn't need to be as tough as some of Panasonic's offerings but It should be able to at least take some sun and the occasional splash. |

Phone survived without incident, shame the same can't be said about flakey O2 GPRS, which was off-line for the last hour of the journey.
Trip back north today, after a short diversion to Coventry motor museum, then a different route, straight up the M6. |

Phone is fine, never even got warm! Even managed to miss the 12 mile traffic jam on the M6 yesterday, then again it was south bound, and i was heading north bound, still it was nice to see Traffic-i is acurate! |
