I have a Sony DHC-MD373 stereo and a Sony DVP-F21 DVD player.

I have just purchased an optical lead to connect the stereo and the DVD together so I can listen to my DVD audio via the stereo.

However, the only audio that comes through the steno is the sounds on the Menus, when the film/program starts, there is no sound.

Can any1 advise me?

do you still have the line in connected thats the red and white plugs (interconnects) if so they will play the menu sounds
if so try taking them out and just leaving the optical in and switch the stereo to aux port
the optical in may only be for recording if the hifi has a mini disc player or cd recorder

doesnt sound like it and coxicial is the same as optical in what it does appart from it does it electically and produces a clean sound (in theory)
without knowing the hifi in question its hard to say but if you have an aux port where you can add adittional products then you will be able to link the dvd up using left and right (the red and white leads that come free with most dvds and hifi though your better off buying a better part for about £10 ) and you can link the dvd upto the hifi this way.
it wont be a lot diff to using the optical if it worked as the hifi is only stereo and wont decode 5.1 or even pro logic as its probably a 2 speaker hifi as a result using interconnectors will allow you to use the hifi speakers and will proiduce a better sound than your average tv
hope this helps
