Is synchronisation only slow with me? |

Hi, I own a P800 from the beginning of May, but I have never succeeded in synchronising my PC with my P800. It is extremely slow even with the most conservative synch setting. What's wrong? I could synch my Palm V in less than a minute!
I use:
W2K on regular Toshiba laptop (7200 Portege)
IR or USB cable (no difference)
Outlook 2000 (yes, default mail program)
1.5.1 of synch software (Dutch version)
R2D on the phone (I believe)
What happens?
.04 start to synch only e-mail from today (just 10!!), no attachments larget than 100kb, no other items. Starting the synch process is already pretty slow, and my harddisk is very very busy
.04 synch software is very busy (HDD led) and says it has not yet started, all other items but e-mail will not be synched
.08 it starts to initialise
.08 it asks for access to MS Outlook, which I allow for 10 minutes
.08 is says 'busy analysing'
.14 it starts to transfer data
.16 it is done synching the 10 small e-mails.
It took 12 minutes to synch my 10 e-mails from today, and I also want my Calendar, notes and tasks to be synchronisated. Shall I take the day off to do so?
Can anyone help? What is so wrong that is has to take 12 minutes and occupies all my PC sources (it is only busy synching, can't do anythinge else really) to synch my small amount of mails?
Help is greatly appreciated,
Dutchie. |

Hi Dutchie,
I had exactly the same type of a problem when I switched from PPC to p800. The problem was in the active sync software or it's remnants in the system. So unfortunately it was not ony about uninstalling the syncing software for the ppc but also reinstalling w2k with a fresh installation of outlook and p800 software. Since then it's worked smoothly & painlessly

You're kidding! Unbelievable, well you may be right. I heard earlier that Palm software could interfere, but I kind of hoped a deinstall would do it. Guess not. Well good to hear that you had the same problems and that it can be solved. So I will be reinstalling then this weekend...
Anyone know of another trick, like remove files or registry setting??

Well there are registry log programs. Meaning the log events in real time among the registry keys. Get regmon for free at http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/source/regmon.shtml and start this.. you will be flooded with loads of text. Because windows uses regkeys... like every millisecond. Start ppc installation and get the dump from it. It will be enormous, but this is what my colleagues do when trying to sort out problems just like this. Will take you some time to find all the keys.. but you might learn something on the way to your solution.

Well, if I were you, I'd first check the application and the system logs (win2000/computer management) for errors. Then go to the device manager, choose "show hidden devices" under the view menu, and check the "Non plug-n-play drivers" for any entries from the old Active Sync installation. Remove any if found. You could also check the Services to see if any services from Active Sync are still installed and running. I wouldn't recommend messing with the registery unless you really know what you are doing. Registery itself would not cause this kind of a slow down. It would have to be some misconfigured keys in the registry, and you won't find those using the regmon unless you know what you are looking for and what the correct values for those keys should be.
I can recomend for you to check the following keys in the registery for any old helper-programs from active sync which havn't been removed:
1. Run regedit
2. Check:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
You can simply delete entries for any programs that YOU ARE CERTAIN you don't need.
*** WARNING *** Messing with the Windows registery can damage the operating system and in worst case cause loss of data and require a complete system reinstallation

Wauw, thanks everyone. It now works great! I must admit that I took the route I was most certain about, and that is a re-install. I have performed a full W2K re-install this afternoon, and now the synching goes very smoothly. It is amazing. Thans to this great forum and its members.
Thank you!
