My guess is that even if it would be possible to implement it, the phone would need some more memory to store the downloaded software..

it's possible... but as oskar wrote... the phone's memory is too smal both to have room for a java engine and for any java applications

As we are discussing java I have a little question..
A couple of days ago a read that someone asked if it would be possible to use wap over bluetooth instead of gprs..
would it be possible to write such an application for a java phone? if you also write some "server" application for your pc?

oskar... in a way yes... but you still need to communicate with GPRS from the phone out on the net

This would of course be technically possible. Writing a gateway application for internet<=>bluetooth has probably already been done...
Getting the phone to know that there is the internet available via bluetooth would be the pain. As said, a java applet could be the answer, but guys, think of the speed...

At Cebit trade fair last week SE demonstrated some T68m with JAVA games installed on them!!
So its technically not a problem.. Just guess that you have to sacrifice lots of other features to free enough memory for running a JAVA VM.
SE also teamed up with Synergenix and iFone for implementing Java into their phones. So future SE phones will have the mophun Engine installed. More info on this can be found from here:

I dont know who wrote that about wap over bluetooth, instead of using gprs.
But apparently its a bit misunderstood,..as Bluetooth is a personal area network,..not a network provided by an operator (like gprs, gsm).
Its 2 different things.
Bluetooth can be compared to e.g. WI-FI (802.11b). Although WIFI is much stronger and demands more power,..cant be used in mobile-phones.
Bluetooth is only for short-distance communication between 2 or more devices.
Bluetooth is in a way very limited, as the phones with bluetooth only reach about 10 metres.
Bluetooth at its highest (with a dongle at e.g. an office) will reach some 120-250 metres.
I've seen people asking about this before ; e.g. using bluetooth as a connection to wap and so on.
The problem, I think, is that people think that Bluetooth is a network like gprs.

@jh67:
No.. I have not misunderstood the difference.. The idea was to be able to use wap on the phone for free when I'm near my computer.. Maybe not very useful, but it would still be fun..
or maybe I have misunderstood it.. but in that case I have not yet understood that I have misunderstood it.. =)

To do this the phone (the bluetooth) needs to comply to certain bluetooth profiles, such as LAN Access profile- client. The T68 does not comply to the Bluetooth LANP profile. |
