It lights when you charge while the phone is off.

[EDIT]
And when you are low on battery.

I miss the green LED blinking when connected to the GSM network. Earlier Ericsson phones I've had, had this feature. It helps you finding the phone in the dark...

I guess there aren't any way of getting this joystick LED to flash with a period of a few seconds, continously?

Don't think so. I know what you mean though, it was nice to have the indication that you had a network signal as well.

Actually, I am glad they stopped with this flashing madness. However it would've been nice if it flashed when you got a message or had a missed call

This is another one that SE can't win. People complained that the blinking green and blue lights on the T68i were too bright and wanted them off and now the T610 doesn't have them... well... people want them!

it requires extrat programming. for a feture most people will have off anyway therefore SE will find it cheaper to not include it. think of it this way for every day they dont release a phoen they loose 100 sales and have to pay a developer anywhere between 4.30 ph - 10 ph.
