When the network 'blacklists' a phone if its been reported stolen, what affect does this have on the phone? can you still access the menus etc but just not make a call or is the phone completely dead?

Depends on the network.
Orange, T mobile and Voda block the phone, whereas o2 simply block the sim (well, they did in my case anyway) |

The blacklisted phone will not accept any sim card. You will never be able to use the phone functions again unless you get the imei changed which is extremely difficult on the newer phones. You will be able to use all the other functions though.

The operator blocks the phone by the imei (serial number of the phone).Once this has been done the phone can never be used as a phone again as it will not accept any sim card (you will get such messages as 'sim card registration failed').All other functions of the 'phone' (if it can still be classed as one) will work.Hope that explains it. (if the imei of the 'blocked' phone is changed, phone will become functional once more) *evil* :)
