I have a P800 and wish to connect to the internet.

All I now is that I have an ISP, a phone number, login details, etc etc as you do with your standard desktop PC.

How do I surf by clicking on the "internet" icon? All i get is the SonyEriccson "ball" bouncing up and down. I click on a link and it says Information: Unknown Error.

Is it actually possible to surf on the phone using the "browser" or have i got it completely wrong? Do i need to download Opera ?

I am sure I have set up a new ISP profile and made it the default but it just doesn't dial. It doesn't say anywhere in the UK manual how to do this properly.

Going mad,

Have you tried going to your isps site and downloading the settings to your phone if they don’t do that you could call them to make sure the settings you put in manually are correct because it should work in the phones internal browser

Thanks for replying. Yep, I use these details on a variety of my laptops (i'm pretty well versed in dialing out).....but I just can't do it on the p800 !!

I can't even use the pre-installed "Vodaphone Web" connection for a start so something's wrong. Can't figure out what.

hmmm...to answer part of your question, yes you can browse with the installed html program but you should definitely install opera, its way better.

i think rather than getting help from us you should call vodafone and explain your problem to them as they can probably be a lot more efficient in helping you. i am a little confused about you saying you want to "dial out". basically you need the right wap settings and ip address from your service provider and all should be well. maybe i am not familiar with what you want to do exactly, but it seems to me vodafone would be able to help

erm, a little bit confused now.

My ISP doesn't provide WAP (?). What i'm assuming is that i can treat the P800 as say a simplified PocketPC with a modem built in, so i can surf.

ie. P800 = PPC2002 + Modem

(so i'm ditching my old mobile phone which had a built-in modem and my pocket pc, replacing it ith P800)

so, I should be able to dial say Freeserve ( DHCP, 8N1, blah blah) and simply use the same settings on my P800.

I have a bad feeling someone's going to tell me that I can't do what i'm asking. But you're quite right, I will ask Vodaphone or whoever to find out more.

Cheers

ok!!!! worked it out.

If you want to use the net (not thru WAP), you have to go the "WAP accounts" section in control panel and go to the "preferred" tab and UNCHECK "Use wap account".

Now when you go to the internal net browser and click a hyperlink you'll get the dial box/dialog to your preferred ISP.

That sux! there should be an easier way to choose WAP or Normal Internet easier.

Thought I'd post here instead of starting a new thread as I'm also having difficulty with P800 internet.
I set up an account with Tiscali.co.uk and whenever I try to connect I just get the message "call was not answered". I've checked all the settings with the site that recommended Tiscali (Filesaves I think) and all the settings match.
Any ideas???

Hi gurpal2000,

It sounds like you are trying to connect to your ISP via a dialup connection instead of using GPRS. If my assumption is correct then, you are dialing up your IPS via their phone number. If you really want to do that then ask your cell provider to enable “data” service on your account before using your cell phone as a modem. However, a lot of providers has dropped their data service for their GPRS service because “data” is a LOT slower and it cost more. What you really should do is setup your GPRS service and access your IPS via their home page (you may have trouble accessing your email account though).

WAP is a nice extra, but not needed, for the P800 because it understands html.

Opera is indeed a better browser.

Hope that helps,
AfF.

INterested in what you were saying about using a seperate ISP with the p800. I have just got my new p800 so am getting to grips with it, and you post about using tiscali has sparked off more questions than answer, i have read those other links too.
So can someone basically tell me what is the advantage of using a normal ISP on the p800 opposed to a GPRS package from Orange ( or whatever network your on )
Isnt it more expensive or slow to use a normal isp on the p800?

Can i use my AOL unlimited account =)

if you have any ideas please email me at:

or just copy and paste what your reply was and email me please.

if ya in the UK use GPRS and if ya on Orange on pay monlthy its free for 3 months! so abuse it!

any other networks dont charge too much for GRPS so giv eit a go
