Americans not interested in smartphones |

Hi to all,
Pls. Read this article: ( http://www.cellular-news.com/story/9340.shtml )
Jupiter Research has found that when choosing a cell phone, USA consumers prioritize small size and voice-related functionality over more advanced features such as integrated digital cameras, games, PDAs or music players. Given the choice of a free basic cell phone or paying for a cell phone with a built-in PDA, digital camera or MP3 player (also known as a smartphone) - a choice offered by nearly all U.S. carriers - most U.S. consumers were not willing to pay as little as US$49.
To make sense of the marketplace, Jupiter Research created a Handset Taxonomy, identifying key attributes that define each device category. "We explored the reasons vendors and carriers are aggressively creating and subsidizing converged devices such as cell phones with built-in cameras, music or computing capabilities. But those reasons have to be measured against actual consumer demand," said Jupiter Research Analyst Avi Greengart.
Jupiter Research conducted an independent survey to assess U.S. consumer demand for advanced cell phone features and to determine their willingness to pay for added functionality at different price points. The new report analyzes the factors that will enable or prevent a dominant mobile platform from emerging and provides actionable advice for handset manufacturers, cellular carriers and application developers. Separate action plans are provided for media, advertisers and retailers dealing with the changing landscape.
"Basic cell phones with voice and text messaging capability will continue to make up the majority of sales, followed by cell phones that can run small Java or BREW applications without overly increasing cell phone size or price," Greengart said. "But cell phones with cameras, MP3 players and/or PDAs will not be widely adopted in the U.S. over the next 12 months," Greengart added. Because interest in converged devices is low, Jupiter Research advises that carriers and handset vendors should create single purpose cell phones, PDAs and MP3 players, and allow them to function as a single unit using Bluetooth wireless technology.
What do you think? Is this true?

True. Vast majority of custs I deal with could care less about sms, photo messaging, MMS, wireless internet, etc. Less and less people are caring about ringtones, as well. They want coverage, sound quality, and more and more want durability (not going to get it). Some even want bigger phones. Most want free. One thing that I have noticed, is that alot of people see no "value" in anything that is free, and there is a link between non paid disconnects and free phones. More likely to occur, vs. those who paid for their phone. |

I would say it is true. Everywhere I go, in college classes, on campus, or at work, when I bust out my t68i or t300 and start playing with the mp3 player, chatboard, communicam, etc. people look at me weird. Some even ask, what is that? And I'll tell them it's a camera or mp3 player, and they think it is really cool, but not cool enough for them to buy it themselves. Also, some people in my computer science classes (i'm a CS major), think it is 'funny' that i use my chatboard when using the pda features in the t68i (calendar, tasks, to do, appointments, etc.). i think what was said earlier is right. people here want sound QUALITY, and coverage. that's why 90% of everyone here uses sprint, even though cdma technology is not as good as a mature gsm network. i think i am the only person i know (out of a lot of people) that even use wap or sms!!!!!!!
i love my se phones, and their features and accessories. if others don't, then forget them. there will always be people like me that want more out of their investments in technology!

Forget cheap! Forget free! In NY some stores offer the T300 and other phones for free plus they give you $200 cash back! The T610 nets out to $25. To get perspective, P800 is sold in those shops for $300. So why shell out when you can get a phone they pay you to take?
Still not sure why americans ignore sms and wap features.

they dont even WANT color screen
I know ppl who hv their battery taped to the phone
ppl want to be able to receive/make calls
and I get made fun of when I'm on MSN on my P800
no one digs it
or maybe it's cuz I'm young and thus ppl get jealous of a guy my age with a 800$ phone

i disagree...i can even say americans are the ones who are willing to spend more money on cellphones, NOT A PDA PHONE, PPC PHONE, but a cellphone.
again, we have different perspectives.
a cell phone is made to make and receive phone calls.
wonder why cars that fly has never been released?
coz i think the majority will not digg it.
if you're that RICH, why not buy a private plane and the most expensive car instead?
why not buy a 5mp camera instead of using the phone's cam since you're willing to spend $$$?
again, portability and ease of use is not an issue here.
just a thought guys...
dont get me wrong as i use
p800s
t610s
GD87/88
...phones with integrated cameras.
