There is a new firmware out for the T616: R1B011

It seems that there are a few improvements. The menus are slightly faster.
Subjectively, the voice volume seems to be a little bit louder as well.

It looks as if there is an RF improvement with this upgrade. We upgraded one phone to R1B and kept one phone at R1A. Both phones are on T-Mobile. The phone with R1B had consistently better RF bars on the display averaging about 4-5 bars. The phone with R1A at the same time was displaying 2-3 bars.

Next we upgraded the phone with R1A to R1B. We now found that the phone had an average of 4-5 bars. Holding it up to the other phone, both phones now had a consistent RF level on the display.

Has the RF improved? I cannot tell as, our coverage is very good at our office. Either the firmware may have made the RF scales more optimistic, or the RF has improved.

Doing the side-by-side comparisons, we also noticed that the menus were quicker. Scrolling through the menus was much more responsive with the new firmware.

If you have noticed any other improvements, please kindly post them in this thread

The tests were done using the uncustomized firmware for R1B011 vs the uncustomized firmware for R1A054

I picked up an unlocked T616 from Cingular yesterday and popped in one of my ATTWS SIM's. First thing I noticed was the dreaded "hiss" whenever I connect a call. Evident thru earbud and internal speaker, dont have the Bluetooth headset yet.

Firmware is R1A054 and build is 2003 week 28. I thought this problem had been resolved ages ago, but now I'm not sure. Have you heard the hiss with any of the phones you have upgraded or unlocked recently? Could the R1B upgrade fix this? This phone is excellent otherwise, but the "hiss" could kill it for me.

Will send in for the firmware change if it will help, but...

when you say "the voice volume seems to be a little bit louder" do you mean the volume in the earpiece while talking? My only real complaint about the T616 is hearing the people calling me.

Thanks,

mdevane: I have not heard of anyone with the "hiss" on the T616. Perhaps you purchased a defective model.

mhapner: The earpiece volume seems to be a little bit louder with the new firmware.

hi, you guys are an official SE service point in USA? Were you always? I got my t68i flashed to a new firmware before at your office in MV. I am probably going to ask you guys to update my T616 firmware in the future too.

hi rickpaul, that's great to hear about the improvments with the firmware upgrade. here's my question though: right now i have an unlocked t616 r1a054, if i get it flashed, will that in turn lock it? also, is it true that i can take it to my operator's (in this case cingular) service center and they will flash it for free?

slamEvil,

I have heard of people taking their phones to the Service Providers to get updates for free. Most stores are not service points, so in these cases, the person may be without their phone from a week to a month. I can not personally vouch for this, as I have not gone through a service provider to get an upgrade.

Being that R1B011 is a factory set firmware, Cingular will not install this on your phone. Cingular will likely only install their prefered version of their customized firmware. Even if they had a customized R1B, they might only install R1A as that is the newest version that they have tested and approved.
