After spending hours trying to figure out why my phone would not turn on, I discovered that I have fallen victim to the "disk full" problem that others have experienced in the past.

As if it isn't pathetic enough that this phone's memory management causes the device to grind to a near-complete halt, it has the gall to claim a disk error. There isn't even a disk in this POS.

This is an incredibly frustrating situation, as the phone takes about 30 times as long as it normally should to do anything. After slogging through the painful process of trying to free up some memory, and wondering if the phone is actually going to do anything at each step, I am rewarded by more "disk full" errors and variations on that theme. I have just now tried a Master Reset of the phone, even though I will lose some recent photos, and even that has failed.

In general, I find the Symbian OS to be sub-par, sluggish and lacking in proper feedback. This memory error is such a fatal flaw that calling it a bug would be disingenuous. I am literally without a phone now, and without any meaningful options.

I am not too upset, since I basically consider myself an early adopter and a beta-tester. Nevertheless, I am not impressed by the operation of this phone. Despite its impressive feature-set, this phone fails to handle the very basics properly, and is a bust in my opinion.

This thread is intended to serve as a warning to potential buyers, not as a prompt for P800 evangelists to defend their purchases. As such, I should also mention that I am running an older version of the firmware (r2D?), as I am in New York and Sony Ericsson will not upgrade the firmware unless I mail my phone to some godforsaken Midwestern place (another reason to hate this phone).

Better luck to the rest of you...

so you are ranting on a p800 post site for what exactly?

if i were you, in my humble opinion, i would just buy something else. or maybe you should try to utilize the resource that is esato and get some help in fixing the problem. screw service, try talking to the community

either way, sorry you are sorry, but this is little help to someone who has not bought the phone yet.
everyone has a photographic memory...some just don't have film

That's not true. I looked here before I bought this phone. I wish now that more people had spoken up about Symbian's poor memory management, as it is a major flaw.

I'm not here to rile up the faithful. I'm not posting here for help. I figured out how to restore the phone, but I lost some data and it cost me a lot of time and frustration. (Yes, my phone was backed up; Sony Ericsson's idea of a complete restore is hardly complete, IMO.) I expect a few people to be defensive here, but the bottom line is that this phone is strong in non-essential features and weak in fundamentals. Just my opinion. If you don't like, no need to post your little puke-smiley. Seems to me like you're the one wasting bandwidth.

do you install all ure apps on the internal c: drive. therefor limiting the available memory for runnin apps?

do you use third party memory managers/compression?

I agree that the P800's memory management is poor. The solution to this is to use Tracker, or something similar, and manually close applications periodically.

This converts the phone from something that really doesn't work properly to an extremely useful, fun to use piece of equipment.

p.s. This phone is not suitable for your average "how do I program the VCR" user.

I'm also curious as to how you've filled up your phone (do you have a lot of contacts? appointments? to-do? pix? etc)

Also one could argue that it's not the OS's fault but rather the programmers who developed the applications that didn't consider what should happen if the disk is nearing full (like should prompt you to delete files to free up space for temp files or something)

ps
the phone does have a disk. one of the definitions of a disk is a medium that contains information (so this could cover the internal memory storage of the p800, memory stick, etc)

well, well, if it isnt the sad case of the user blaming the programmers for their own mistake?

fill up ur C: on ur computer, and tell me what happens
let's see if windows/linux/UNIX/macOS runs

u got 12mb, give the 12mb a break, that's what memory stix were made for
if u install too much stuff and dont realize, then how is that 's fault?
mayb u werent meant for the P800
dont bash the phone cuz u cant use it!

All the OS would run because they automatically allot a fixed temporary space so at least the OS would start. Other applications that automatically starts and needs a temp file but doesn't have the space will fail or run slowly and usually before you could fill up your harddrive some of the OSes mentioned would alert you that the disk is nearing full

The p800 is a consumer phone and thus everyone can't be expected to have a comsci/engineering and any related degrees to understand that this is not your average mobile phone and requires special attention to some of features for the phone to run smoothly. Now being a consumer phone means that you have a wide range of possible audiences and maybe even your grandma might use one (and needless to say they didn't have any mobile phones during their time) That said there are a lot possible cases where the phone might fail. But most cases can be avoided if the scenario was taken into consideration when the developers are working on the applications for the phone.

Hi All,

I'm staying on the fence RE: the P800 is 'technically' great or flawed arguments; if you don't like it, go get something else.

I've had mine for two weeks now, and barring a couple of quirks (which I'd expect to find with any high-tec device), I'm totally bowled over by it.

As recommended by an earlier poster in this thread, I do spend a lot of time looking through these community pages for tips, hints and any other morsels of information to enhance my usage of my phones.

As a rule, I now keep - without exception - 2MB+ free on the C: storage unit of my P800. Core apps are stored there, along with core ringtones etc. Anything else gets stored on the MSDUO, e.g. games etc. and these sticks can be hot-swapped so there's no reason to complain at this methodology.

P800 rocks.

Steven.

for those of you with Duo's, why use the internal memory at all?

Mine has about 7mb on it free all the time, and until I start taking photos it stays like that.

Ok,
I'm a lucky user who's got a 64Mb stick (btw, it's enough for me, it's not even half full...).
My internal memory is always 8 Mb free, even if i start taking photos it'll automatically store them in the stick, so...

Bottom line: always check for your free internal memory from times to times and i would advise to try to have at least 4-5 Mb free. [addsig]
