Through the messaging account set-up it's possible to schedule automatic connection to your POP3/IMAP server to check for e-mail. This works reasonably well, but it fails to take in to account the realities of mobile phone usage.

It's possible to set a MB limit for each e-mail, but The need for this is best illustrated by an example:

My anytime hours are between 7pm and 7am the next morning. So I have set up my phone to fetch my e-mail a 6:55am and 7:05am using CSD. However, I also want to check my mail in the middle of the day, so I also have my phone checking at 1pm. This is during my peak hours, so in an ideal world I'd be able to set a lower MB limit for this scheduled fetch than the other two, but that's not possible.

In addition, I'd like to be able to have separate MB control for GPRS and CSD. I only have 3MB of GPRS per month (I have to pay 3 cents per kB after that!), so I'd like to set a lower limit than for my off-peak CSD.

Finally, rather than setting a limit for each e-mail, setting a limit for the entire session would make more sense. I have a 20kB limit set, but I'd be in trouble if I receive ten 19kB e-mails per day by GPRS. That would slap an $80 addition on to my monthly bill!

Of course in my ideal world, I'd be able to set a monthly limit for my GPRS (along with the start date for the billing cycle) and have my phone adjust it's transfers to a lower MB limit (say headers only) once I exceed that limit.

Am I alone in thinking that this kind of control must be included in a phone while we continue to have these billing structures?

You are paying to much in GPRS.

I pay 0.146484375 of a cent, per KB, this is not for Euro(100 cents), this is for cent(1 cent)!

Its about 6-7KB per cent.

Very cheap!

Try and go on a GPRS plan! much cheaper!

I'd rather setup my phone to download headers only (which i have). In my case, my phone's not my primary email device so i only use the feature to automatically check if i have email even when my pc isn't online. And i would still be able to read the email upon downloading the msg body as needed. If you don't need it badly then just download headers only. Otherwise i agree you should get a GPRS-oriented plan. :-D

You are totaly right and I forgot to mention that also. I do the same as you! Only download the headers, its much better, you can tell form the subject if it is junk mail or not. Any download bigger then 60kb is going to be a pic! What untill you get to work!

Yes, I do want a better rate for GPRS, but my provider (Cingular) doesn't offer one. The only option would be to pay a huge monthly fee to get 7MB and 1 cent per minute. GPRS is still a novalty here in the US. It's not like in Europe. Here only T-Mobile have anything approaching a good deal on GPRS.

After Nov we'll be able to change service provider and keep our old phone numbers. I might switch to t-Mobile then.

Anyway, I'd still like more control of how much data I transfer based on the time of the day, etc.
