T610 to T616 Upgrade to switch from GSM 900 to GSM 850? |

Does anyone know if it is possible to change/upgrade the T610 to an T616 so that it uses GSM 850 instead of GSM 900.
In other words, I bought the wrong phone for the US The phone works fine, but reception is poor in places where it used to be okay with my T28 World).
Any help appreciated...

Nope, you gotta buy one. You shouldn't lose too much money in the whole affair since they are both new...as long as your T610 is in mint condition |

I found mine on eBay for US$355. Just make sure it is not locked to Cingular.

I'm trying to figure this out...The T28 uses the same bands as the T610. And only Cingular uses the band that the 616 supports. So what would switching the phone do?

In the US, Cingular uses 1900 and 850mhz (T616) compared to the T28w and T610 (1900, 1800 & 900) |

The t28w is only duel band ie 900 gsm for europe and 1900 gsm for the americas . So the t28w should have the same reception as the t610

I agree with that assessment: both the T610 and the T616 work on the GSM 1900 for the US.
However, maybe to explain my original post about upgrading a T610 to a T616 for GSM900/GSM850, I had read on a mobile phone reseller website that the T616 had been tuned up specifically for the US whereas the T610 had allegedly been tuned up for Europe, implying that it would be better to use a T616 in the US. I assumed that having GSM 850 instead of GSM900 might improve the reception on a GSM1900 network (maybe because of different hardware or firmware implementation - just speculating as I am in no way a GSM expert).
Lately, I sold my T610 and replaced it with a T616: after two days of testing, I did not see any noticeable difference in reception between the two phones. The reception is poorer that with any other phone I have tested previously since I am a T-Mobile customer: Ericsson T28 World, Nokia 7720, Nokia 6610, and Samsung S205.
As much as I like the SonyEricsson T610/T616 phones for their ease of use, and sync capability with my Bluetooth equipped Macintosh (address book and calendars), I must admit that in terms of reception, they both are equally inefficient.
Now, my next question is: does anyone have any idea as to how the reception can be boosted?
As usual, any help and input will be appreciated

I found the following Ericsson, T-Mobile Press Release that may explain a lot...

I'm sitting here with my aunt's brand new 3650, and my Sony Ericsson T610 here in CA. Now usually in their house I can get 2 bars with my T610. Today i'm getting 3... more than what the 3650 has !
I know you guys are going to say 'Nokia...' (I would have too), but this nokia is a much larger phone and logically (if they were smart) they would implement a larger RF antenna.
Just my 2 cents...

Bought a T610 in EU and brought it with me over to the states. Works just fine, got a T-Mobile data unlimited plan. But have not gotten a t-mobile network once, only cingular and occasionally at&t. The US is like a third world country when it comes to coverage, so I don't think it matters what phone you have honestly. |

I have a friend that works for the FCC and he explained to me that those with TMobile won't benefit from using a T616 because TMobile doesn't own any bandwith in the 800MHz to 899MHz frequencies. Only Cingular and AT&T will have access to the new 850MHz bandwith because they are reusing their licenses for their 800's MHz frequencies. The 800 frequencies were used by AT&T and Cingular in their older networks, before the rollout of the 1900MHz frequency. The FCC has authorized them to convert their old 800 networks to the new GSM850 networks. TMobile never had any license for the 800's frequencies and the FCC has stopped giving out new licenses for those frequencies. |

I just bought an unlocked T616 from a third party vendor and just had that problem! So the new T616 will not work on the Tmobile network?? Am I understanding that correctly? When I called SE they verified that I can use the T616 in NY with tmobile *Sigh*. So what is the real deal? With the T616 being a triband phone, that does not matter here in the US?
Man this is confusing heh..
