Personally I think I'd look very stupid walking down the street holding my phone out in front of me and talking to it....
The tarrifs are great though... 750 mins cross network!! booya!
Hopefully they will incorporate GPRS into that massive bandwidth available for video and browsing on mobiles wont be so tedious....
cant see why they havent done this yet...
if they did z1010, bought. nuff sed

How long is this 750 min cross network inma last though. They can't keep that going for a year surely? It must be a sweetnes to hook you in. And yes, you would look stupid doing that. I reckon it'll fail.

It's actually cheaper for networks to operate 3G in terms of calls, as you can have more people on per money spent on cell's, also, the other networks have been sucking cash out of us all for years, to pay for 3G, or to takeover other companies, or to fund their mother companies ( Orange -> France Telecom etc. ), it's about time the prices dropped properly, especially seeing as the network transfer charges have been lowered and subsidies are less also |

The 3G network phones dont actually have any form of WAP/HTML browsing available on them!
They instead offer pay per use information services which u request from them using a menu like Vodafone Live! on the handset. In real terms, most of the screens are a bit too small for HTML browing (cept that big NEC), thou WAP should have been included methinks.
As far as I know, GPRS is '2.5G' and the bandwidth is crap compared to a '3G' network, I dont know if the phones have got GPRS on them (prob not if u cant surf?) but it would be a waste of money to add GPRS as the 3G speeds surpass any other technology offered before.
Im not even sure if u can hook ur PC/Laptop up to the phone and use it for surfing. I know the clamshell NEC does have a USB data cable to hook it up2ur PC to d/l videos onto the phone and vice versa.
They are offering very good tarrifs, which I was told they are able to do as they have no huge debts like the other networks due to them being a fresh competitor in the UK mobile market. Unfortunately, Orange is refusing to offer the 500/750mins tarrifs on OVP as they say they cannot afford to do so.
I went to the CPW show in Earls Court and the 3 stand was one of the best with the friendliest staff. They were showing off the silver clamshell NEC and to be honest, I wasnt sold on the video calling or the phone!
You cant seem to multitask it always stops u opening new apps by telling u that u have other apps open and the menu system I found bit confusing and cumbersome.
No1 I know is gonna b rushing out buy it, but I have to say that if they offered a 3G P800 I would def have gone for it.
I would wait till they have some more decent phones available..Motorola and NEC brand phones are kinda scraping the barrel (except mayb to dumb americans! lol)

3G is NOT for us its for THEM (The Networks) its just a carfully controlled way of taking our money for things we are at the moment getting for free, its a big stitch up.
If you are hell bent on playing with the video capabilities, & want to find out fast JUST how inconvenient video phones are in practice, then fine, but i still think 3G has little to offer at the moment, give it 4yrs.

one of the UK operators (cant remember who) did a 3G trial in the shetland ials(SP?) and it failed they handed out free 3G handsets and free mins providiong they could moniter what u used your handset for and fill out a feedback form there was a documentry on this a while back before three even existed (three as in the network) basicly the service was down 99% of the time and voice was only avalable. i seem to remember them having a semens phone in the trials.
3G is a money making scam 1 of the guys at work have jus got a 3G phone and it is huge compaired to the phones now. TBH they are bricklike. (no insult to the P800 (im not a fan of the 800 cos if the shape) its a nice size but it looks like a soapdish with a flip but these phones are worsly designed and are heavy aswell the P800 is godlike compaired to them)
enuff said!
IMO dont go 3G
EDIT: i got the wrong place see no8080's post thats what i was talking about

I will probably get into 3G after the competition comes at the end of the year and the prices start to fall AND also only when I can use it with my pc/ipaq etc. Do these 3G phones have IR or bluetooth yet?

Manx telecom ran a trial based on the Isle of Man in early 2002, they gave out free handsets and didn't charge the users for any 3G features to begin with. It was used heavily, when available, but the minute they started to charge for the 3G services no one was interested. The trial was deem as a failure due to many reasons.
3G still suffers from numerous technical difficults, the worst being 'cell breathing'. I don't think they have solved that one yet. Basically the bandwidth from each cell is shared between the users, so the more users on each cell, the lower the bandwidth. Just like broadband, if and when 3G becomes popular the SP's will need to keep installing more cells in order to maintane 3G services, like video calls.
I am waiting to see what happens with 3G first, but the good thing about 3G is that it will help drive down the prices for 2.5G stuff like GPRS. |

I spoke 2 a guy in the Oxford St 3 sho and he said 3 new phones were coming out in the Autumn.
The SE Z101 whateva its called, the Nokia 6600 or summin (u know the one ppl r comparin 2 the p800) and a touchscreen one from another company, Siemens?/Samsung? cant remember, but Im sure regular users know what phones im talking about. The guy said those phones are exclusive to 3 adn no other network wil have them, Im guessin coz the other networks havent sorted out their 3G offerings yet, whateva theyll b, ul b sure theyl b pricy!
Also the phones will have WAP/HTML browsing capability, which the current NEC/Motorola 3G offerings dont have.
Also didnt the guy who invented 3G say recently that its not very good and the newer WCDMA or whateva its called is better and will prevail. Guess all the networks are kicking themselves 2 have spend billions on stupid licences for already outdated technology! Oh well more price rises for us then!
