Ok, here I go again...
I've just downloaded Ogg player.
Also downloaded dbpoweramp to convert the mp3's...
Unfortunately i aint got a clue how to convert the files over. Do I convert them to wav files??? I tried to find the option to convert to Ogg - but it aint there (if this is a stupid question, sorry. But i did do a search on here and there isnt a thread that explains how to do this)
Thanks |

u need the ogg vorbis codec to convert to ogg ...
go back to the dbpoweramp site and then follow the links for codecs ...
if you need more information, try http://www.vorbis.com for details on best settings, etc

Cheers Craig.
I downloaded all the relevant software and managed to convert a couple of files.
But, I did find that both of the files once converted to Ogg were double the size of the original mp3!
EG. 1 mp3 was 2.99mb - once converted to Ogg it was 4.41mb
Hmmmmmmmmm???
Any sugestions folks? |

it depends on what settings you chose for the ogg file.
setting 2 seems to give pretty good results with a smaller file size.
check out http://www.vorbis.com for an explanation of what the settings actually mean.
what setting are you using ? |

Paul, are you using setting 2 also? Or are you using another setting? |

Craig when you say "setting 2" do you mean the quality setting?
I checked out that link you sent me, and went into the FAQ section - As I suspected it was all double dutch to me at 1st, but I read and re-read and finally began to understand... But after all that I could not locate any section that explained the settings.
I'm just about to lower the quality setting to 2 and see if that works.
Fingers crossed.

I think the file size is related to the bitrate at which you encode the files. Lower this and the file size gets smaller. :-D

im a bit lost with this ogg thing do you..
(a) ripp a file, say from cd to mp3 and then convert to ogg?
or do you
(b) just ripp from cd to ogg at what ever setting u want?
cause i did (b) and the files where very big (well bigger than i thought they should be) :??
and i tried loads of different settings.. Cd N Go is the prog i used.. am i missing something??
in plain english i read somewhere that a Mp3 file of 128kbps is the equivalent of an ogg at 56 so please someone help me cause i listened to the quality of what i ripped and the file sizes where v.big and quality wasnt as great as everyone is saying
Thanx

I thought it was mp3 128kbps = ogg 96kbps?
I did convert my mp3 128kbps down to 96kbps and the resulting mp3 files were smaller and I was listening through earphones so CD-quality music doesn't really matter that much.

yea but do you start by ripping your music to mp3 and then to ogg? cause i ripped from cd to ogg and the files where the same size as when i ripped the same track to mp3 and i used the same bitrate etc etc

I read some people say it's better to do a direct conversion (CD -> ogg) Also saves time with the conversion process
