I upgraded to a T316 (T310 except GSM850/1800/1900 instead of 900/1800/1900) . Nice phone overall, and only cost me $20 including the MCA-25.

Being a curious soul, I popped into the service menu (>*<<*<* of course, thank you SE for being nothing if not predictable)

It had Software: R1B005 on it, which I'm guessing in Cigular's default load.

The box was brand new (so new the T316 wasn't in the sales-system for the dealer and they had to ring it up by hand) and had included info to get a free Charlie's Angels game (not too fun so far) and a free ringtone credit. The salestaff had never sold one, only the T306.

Anyways, since this was a new purchase, I expected the phone to be locked to good 'ole network 5 (Cingular/Pacbell Wireless) but to my suprise, the Network, Network subset, SP and Corperate locks were all "open" when I checked.

I have to dig up my mint SIM just to test it, but I'm pretty sure they handed me an unlocked handset for $20 (of course I still have a contract instead of month-to-month, but I'm okay with the service)

If anyone else has gotten a T316 from Cingular can you check and see if it's unlocked?

Thanks

I'll be interested to have someone get a T616 when they come out if they are unlocked. I'm a T-Mobile customer BTW.

You have to test it to see if it works. I have a friend who will send me a t316 if it is unlocked.

I'm not surprised at all. I've been a T-Mobile USA customer for 4 years now, and the 3 phones I have had (2 Ericsson T28 World's, 1 SE T68i), came unlocked straight out of the box, brand new. I have tested all 3 phones with 'foreign' SIM cards in the U.K. and in the Middle East (on various carriers), and they all worked like a charm. I don't think GSM providers in the US are too worried about people knowing about unlocked phones since GSM is still new here, unlike the intense competition in Europe and Asia.

All the phones I've purchased that have been T-Mobile branded have been locked. However, T-Mobile was more than happy to give me unlock codes for them.

I'm really surprised that you got an unlocked phone from Cingular. They would be the last carrier on Earth to do that. They are very strict in unlocking a phone for you even if you've been a loyal customer. Consider yourself lucky.

So far, all current Cingular T616 owners are reporting that their phones are factory unlocked, for $299.00 (no contract)

Pretty cool!

My probem is, I can't find a store in my area that has any in stock

Most of the phones that have a non-US frequency come unlocked for Cingular. T28z, T68's, V60gi, etc. The US only phones should be the only ones that come subsidy locked. If you are told by a rep that it is locked, is usually because the cust has given the rep the indication that it is going to be bought to hook up with another GSM carrier, either in US or abroad.

I have the same phone with the same firmware. Under the SIMlock, it shows a lock that isnt fully locked, with a 5 beside it. Does this mean it is locked to network 5?
