what system do they use? Gsm or cdma or what?? can i use the p800 there?

I think they use CDMA and 3g. If I'm correct, then no the P800 will not work in Japan..

I sometimes see this written as Personal Digital System and Pacific Digital System.
Maybe you can ask a friend to buy you a pre-pay mobile. I think residents only can buy these but maybe some shops bend the rules.
Rental is also an option. Some companies will deliver to your hotel and arrange collection. These phones had Japanese and English menu's. A search should reveal good companies.
