Yes this is for real, I have done this myself.
Equitalk is one of those companies where you put their code, in this case 1664, in front of the phone number you want to call and they bill you for the call.
Well in this case for the first £5 of calls they don't bill you, they are free. You are not commited to making any further calls with them, although there call costs are very competetive. You can check out how your £5 is being used up on their site.

They have a 5p minimum call charge, which MY alternative landline airtime provider doesnt do, minimum call charges make your bill high, nice of them to offer £5 free though.
I personally wont use them though because i only use alternative companies if they provide me with a 0800 number access code,that way i can have the BT low user scheme running. (Knocks your landline rental back to about £11 every three months)
A good company that gives a 0800 access code is Telco (for details call 08005941000) the service can be accessed from a mobile also.
