Hello to all Esato users

I had a small showdown with India a couple of days ago. Thought to share it Esato members.

Waring: Long post ahead…

It all began on 14th June when I purchased my P800. The original phone turned out to be defective (couldn’t connect to GPRS). I was pretty worried because service in India is quite poor but was pleasantly surprised when the service centre replaced my phone with a new one.

I’ve been using phones (IMHO is the king of mobile phones) for quite sometime now and had made repeated requests/enquiries for the HPR 20 FM Radio handsfree. So far, I’d had received no positive reply about its availability in India from either Customer Care or its distributors.

Now that I’d finally got the P800, I decided it was time for a final confrontation. Either provided me the HPR 20 or I’d sell off my P800 no matter how much money I lost in the process.

So I sent a strong note to Customer Care telling them about the mess they were in. Their reply : “… the HPR 20 will be available with our distributors … shortly…”.

I called up the distributors only to find that they were clueless about the HPR 20 and always me call back later. In fact when I asked them about the Memory Stick Duo and they replied that they never heard of it!

On 24th June, on calling up my dealer (from whom I bought the P800), they informed that only 2 pieces has landed in the city and they were all sold/committed to VIP customers. This time I was really pi**ed off with . I asked the dealer for the email address of the General Manager, South Asia of Sony Ericsson. Incidentally, the person is based is India and had recently visited my city and met major dealers in my city (including these guys).

On 25th June I sent my final mail to Customer Care with a copy to the General Manager, South Asia of Sony Ericsson. I my email I wrote (I’m not quoting the exact words)…

“I was informed that… only 2 pieces reached … and were all committed to VIP customers…
I would like to ask SE : How many P800’s do I need to buy in order to qualify as a VIP customer???…
This apathy towards customers is pathetic…
How does SE expect to excel in India when its distributors are such morons…”

I didn’t receive a reply except for the auto response from . On 26th June, I called up my dealer again to know if there’s been any progress.

Imagine my surprise when dealer informs the my mail was forwarded to the distributors in my city and one HPR 20 was being specially flown in for me from head office in New Delhi, India. I finally got my HPR 20 in the evening and the dealer informed about the tough time that I’d given to the and its local distributors.

For me it was a battle won and the HPR 20 well deserved. However, in the end I must say that all this has restored my faith in . I’m thankful to and its distributors for going out of their way (I did push them a little ) to provide service.

The HPR 20 is one coool gadget even though its pretty expensive here in India (almost USD 60). I’d recommend it to all users who love music.

Coming up in the near future : How I won my ‘128MB MS Duo’ battle against SE!!!
(MS Duo is still practically unheard of in India. Dealers/distributors give blank looks when I ask them about it. Let see how well I fare in my struggle to get hold of one.)

Cheers

Thanks to teg and Vermania.

The P800 costs about USD 750 (in Indian currency, about INR 37000).
Its price is in the same range as the Nokia 9210i Communicator.

It quite easily available though shops usually stock only 1 or 2 sets. In fact, launched it India even before some European countries. It was initially offered during Jan 2003 at only about USD 600 as part of a promotion campaign of the GPRS services of Hutchison in India. This was when its price was about USD 1000 elsewhere.

don't think it's for the whole country but for that specific shop only anyways, the guy knows what he wants and isn't afraid to go to the extra length in getting it (but i do agree that he has gone extra length in getting it and I doubt it very much I'd do the same but hey its what makes him happy
