P800 This is MUCH better... but then... |

Hi guys,
Got the P800 upgraded yesterday over at fleet comms in Eltham SE9, London (good service there btw). I am now on R2F for the phone and R5A for bluetooth, Orgainser is R2B03 and CDA (que?) is R4A02.
What can I report back? MUCH better touch screen, it's easier to use with your fingers now and for the first time I can dial a number without needing to keep from biting my index finger's nail to do so! Speed seems improved but whether that's just psychological I'm not sure.
There's quite a few small differences, some menus I have noticed link better between themselves which makes changing options easier and the camera function seems much improved with better options and no annoying SE whitescreens flashing in now and again.
All in all VERY happy so far but I'll report back in later to let you know how it's going.
On a seperate note, after seeing the whineging... I use my P800 a LOT, it's a business and lifestyle tool for me - it lets me use my brain for thinking whilst it remembers all the names, number, facts, figures, dates and anniversaries. NEVER have I had a problem synchronising with outlook (although catergories that worked would be nice) and the restore function works perfectly - and did so after the firmware upgrade, it ran like a dream.
All positives I'm sure you'd agree but here's one small issue I need your help on. I've installed oggplayer and converted a couple of high quality mp3 to ogg (great compression... HOW does it do so well and not lose out!) thing is, the oggs play fine on PC but on the P800 they sound like they're been played down a tube or something - all distant and echoey, also very quiet.... seems to be related to playing with headphones though as the handsfree sounded better.
When you plug the headphones in and don't listen to anything I can hear a constant "clicking noise" in the phones.... it sounds like intereference from something.
Can anyone shed any light on these issues? Your help is most appreciated.
P.S forgot to add I also use P800 from instant messaging, email, internet and also remote controlling some servers... all works amazingly well.... antoher plus! (seeing a windows 2000 screen on the P800, logging in and changing settings live onscreen is amazing!)

About the clicking noise in the handsfree...
It has happened to me twice. The first time it was clicking and there was no sound in one of my ears... A simple reboot helped...
The second time I had not pushed them in hard enough... |

Thanks, I'll give it a go but it was doing it before the firmware upgrade, is doing it now and I couldn't push the headphones in harder without pushing them through the casing!!
Shame only one reply.... sounds like there's not many people that know about this problem. |

I got that to i put it down to the P800's sound processor. Also can you advise a good MSN messenger program. And what does remote control server mean?

I got jMSN which I liked, removed it because I never used it.. but I like it still. Remote control server is a program for your P800 and computer where the server and client is the computer and phone. You are suppose to access your computer with the phone that is.. I think it uses GPRS. Anyone else who tested this? (Hope I am not all wrong now)
I never tried it, because it wouldn't work with my LAN. I am not keen on opening too many ports.

TipicMe is a good im client as uses a jabber server. You can connect it to pretty much any im service, msn, aol, icq, etc.,
Remote control server is like VNC if you've heard of that - have a google round on vnc viewer and you'll see what it is
So, no one else has a problem listening to audio then?? |

MP3 to ogg is NOT the best way to make your oggs. Take them from the original CDs if you can. CD > ogg. |

the clicking noise is caused by the wires moving about and touching the earbuds where they connect. i'm thinking about gluing the wire to stop it moving.

No, I'm not talking about that kind of noise, instead I'm talking about definite interference from the phone. A constant click, same time between clicks and definitely related to the phone. |

Two clicks every two seconds? No idea what that is, nor do SE. They couldn't hear it. If that's what you got, then my guess is that it's the clock. I mean 2 clicks on exactly every 2 seconds. It can't be coincidence?!

well.. I have OggPlay v0.7 (excellent peice of software, certainly for the books).
First thing u have to rememebr is that Playing Oggs really places EXTREMELY heavy demands on the processor (I dont think the Nokia Series 60 phones can handle it yet, as their processors are slower). Its significantly greater than playing an MP3. Already the processor is almost at its threashold, and ANY other task that demands anythign from the processor is going to steal some processor cycles from the OGG player. Because of limited memory on the P800 compared to a PC, there is not enough space to add a larger buffer to compensate.
This is what causes the clicks.. normally when u open the flip, or switch tasks, u hear a definate "click" or breakup. v0.7 improves this, but its still there. The fact u get a click every two seconds, sounds liek some task you have is runnign in the background and constanly pinging the processor every 2 seconds. Another posibility is that there may be a device constanly disovering bluetooth services? (this will chew some cycles too).
Lastly, have a look at the way the Ogg files are created. maybe the encoder is introducing those clicks? Try the following, use WinLAME encoder, and encode a wav file straight from CD at 64kbps. see if you still get the clicks.
@if the developer of OggPlay is reading this.. how about implementing the Ogg playback engine as a media server? that way it may get better processor utilisation, cutting the breakups?

OK guys,
Testing whilst I am here. No ogg player loaded, running nothing more than Handy day 80k, Applications 76k and phone 728k. Put in the supplied handsfree headphones and I and getting a click noise every second (just timed it with my PC system clock). I've installed a file converter onthe PC for MP3 to OGG and have converted a 192kbps track to ogg. This track has been played on my PC (as an OGG) and it sounds as good as the original. Playing the same files on the P800 and it sounds like the song is being played in a can/tunnel/take pick! All echoey and almost incoherent. Here's the confusing bit.... taking the headphones out of the phone and then playing the track through the loudspeaker and it sounds fine (no bass and a bit tinny but that's because of the speaker quality).
ANY IDEAS?????
In response to firmware upgrade by post:
I don't see any reason why they shouldn't.
Don't have a number handy but they are:
Fleet Mobile Comms,
77 Avery Hill Rd,
New Eltham
SE9 2BJ
I just walked in and left phone for 40 mins.
