OK,
I am probably gonna get flammed for this. I have seen many posts about the best killer apps for the p800. While most on the list are decent, and also quite usefull I cant help but feel that they are MICKY MOUSE in comparison to what I have expected. I have had my p800 for about 4 months and I have pretty much tested everything out for p800 out there. I have 128mb duo and I am still waiting for an application that deserves to be called a KILLER APP. We have a fast processor, open os, great display, Huge memory... Whats going on. I had better applications on my 286 16mhz computer in the good old days !! I want an application package. not little utilities or applets.. Lets see the response

Someone did ask for an idea on what application he/she should work on. You should hook up with him/her and make that killer app you have in mind (I'm assuming you do have something in mind because you did say that the current apps is not up to par to your standards

Not sure what exactly is a killer app........but certainly for me world mate and handy day have enhanced my p800 no end, traffic i too is another really great app.... I am racking my brain trying to think of what I could really do with on my p800 app wise....i am sure when it is does eventually come out I will say how could have I lived without this!!?? Anyway my P800 is off to se as it crashed during firmware upgrade, up to 3 weeks without it, that is really painful, back to my t68i, it doesn't do much does it!?

i have to agree - there are some good applications like handy day, oggplay and worldmate out there.

when i think of the p800 the word i think of is 'potential' - this device could and should be able to edit office documents and perform most of the functions that I do on my iPaq or PC that are suitable for a small screen but it can't.

the p800 has so much potential but we are still getting 'mobile phone' type applications such as todo lists and all the mastersoft list type apps.

whether the developers are still thinking 'mobile phone' or the development environment isn't there or even some of these apps ARE being developed I don't know ...

until then, the p800 is just a phone with some patchy organiser functionality and a few good apps but loads of potential ...

Killer apps for me is SMS function and phone book function (including calling etc). The rest of the progs I use are just nice things to have in a phone.

Finally a post worthy of a discussion.. not 'what kind of case' 'where's the video recorder' 'you're a jerk-off' usual stuff.

The device has been fairly criticized in reviews for being too much between both worlds - PDA and phone. The apps help to lean it in the PDA and beyond category, but I agree that developers haven't pushed it to the degree it needs to go, that is, make it a truly unique device that not only does your communicating and organizing but helps and surprises you.

Why this is might have something to do with money - has the unit sold enough to create a base of paying customers who are willing to shell out for good apps?

Anyway, Real and AvantGo are two obvious players who have not done something for the p800 yet, though both have done stuff for Nokia. I don't believe it's an exclusivity thing (tho I could be wrong) but rather a 'why bother' thing. Anyone know the real reason we haven't seen these apps for the p800 yet?

Otherwise, I would like to see some kind of news app that dloads headlines hourly, doc editor, html mail reader, stock scanner/alert dohicky + live ticker on Today screen, other 'push'-type apps (this technology never worked on desktops but seems to me it would be quite nice to have constantly updating info on one page on my p800), a Copernic Agent-type app that lets you search multiple search engines, save and categorize Web pages for indexing...

What else could it do?

despite finding the p800 excellent i sort of partially agree. although if you want news then i think you can use the mobipocket web companion which as far as i can tell gives you a selection of news from various sources around the world and downloads them, i think, from internet to your pc and then onto your p800 - i dont know if its possible to do this directly download from mobipocket site to your p800.
yes avant go or perhaps some form of enhanced mobipocket or enhanced repligo something like that would really make it for me. more than anything i want excel editing. to do this at the moment i have converted my excel spreadsheets to comma seperated values which i then sync across as a jotter note. i can then alter values and later on resync back to my pc then import into excel. but all a bit of a faff.
so if they could just sort out one basic good functional business app that is a word/excel editor i would be happy.

totally agree with the founder of this post.
there is no killer applciation yet. i personally thinkt hat handy and maybe 2 other apps are good, but i wouldnt call em KILLER apps.
what i would call a killer application is maybe a black list for the p800 or even city maps(yea keep dreaming JB), that would make me stop complaining for awhile.

@jbendaou
Black lists should be possible to make. Like when a certain person calls they get a "busy" tone all the time. There are just that in PABX systems like Nortels meridian and Ericssons MD110 and Fenix 50/250. Just need a third party dude/dudette to make this app.
I am not much into using that option with the list where you have to add everyone who is allowed to call...

adding the people who u wanna talk to in a list isnt really practical at all, since sometimes u can get calls from a payphone, out of state, unavailable area,etc... so that black list should come to reality PRETTY soon, please!!!

i totally agree and i cant understand why there has been so little development in apps etc for symbian UIQ when the development of stuff for Series 60 has gone sky high surely you can port applications from series 60 to UIQ (series 70?)
in fact u can i saw something to do that very thing on the developer mobilty world website..

so whats the story

For me pushed info like mentioned above would be great, id also like to see the Openbit "Photographer" program (series 60) and also some small image editing progs there is one brilliant program i have on my 3650 called camera fx with some excellent effects etc.. also there's a program called ringtone studio for series 60!!!..
God i could go on and on and on...
just my personal preference

It's true that Killerapps for the p800 doesn't really find their way :/

Though one i like is the "Remote control server" for the p800, but that also very personal if you have a need for it :/

But as said SOOO many times before, what is really needed, is an office app.. If you are interested in having an app like that try look at this thread:

http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=26272&forum=35#post382349

It's a company making an office application called "Quickoffice" for pda's and so... They have looked at making it for the p800, but they are not sure if there's a market in it, so i guess we just have to convince them ;D

One of the core reasons, I understand from programmer-friends, is that you really need the $800-$1K CodeWarrior IDE to do development - the SE free environment is buggy, broken and badly documented; for professional programmers time can be money, so the SE burns them as badly wasted time. For part-time and new programmers, the CodeWarrior environment is too explensive to experiment with. What are we left with? Crappy MS Basic apps running in an emulator...feh!

The tools are the key - if the CW IDE was $250, they'd sell hundreds - maybe thousands. SonyEricsson should subsidize it, if only to make-up for the crap they foisted earlier, but more to push the platform as an alternative to Palm/WinPPC.

On a GOOD note tho, the Palm developer Iambic, maker of Agendus, has written me back on Agendus for the P800/UIQ platform. They have one there and they've gotten some basic functionality already going (this was 1.5 months ago). The integration between the calendar, notebook, tasks and phonebook would be a godsend alone. I've been a Palm user for 4 years, until the P800 came around, and I wait eagerly for it.

Check out their website, www.iambic.com, and if you're also as jazzed as I am then jot them off an email in support of their development. It is so far ahead fo anything in the marketplace...

i totally agree with you on the CW prise etc and SE's stance in the whole setup i also think people should mail the companies that make software for other platforms/versions and let them know that u think their software would be great if available for your particular Phone/PDA etc ive mailed several companies that make software for Symbian Series 60 saying i think they should develope that software for Symbian UIQ and most of them are activly developing software titles and pretty soon we will have, to name just two top progs..

(1) Camera FX photographer program
(2 ) ETI Camcorder Video recording program

i contacted 6 months ago both theses companies and Software releases are imminent
have been keeping a lot of things close to their chest with the Camera API only just been made available 2 developers
