is this phone available anywhere else in the world? I saw one in the store. They said that that was a store demo, but they're gonna get more in. I wonder if it has any new sw?

Okay someone help me. I just got this exact phone from AT&T and I thought it was identical to all other Lunar Grey T68 around.

What's different?

it is except that ATT locks their phones to their network, so if you try and use cingular or go oversees, you are SOL

That's what I thought. I was told that AT&T does have roaming set up with other carriers and special plans. i suppose they're intended to be for temporary situations like for travel.

At some point they will have to do away with that to offer prepaid services. Since ATT GSM is new in most markets they are not offering that feature yet.

What market are you in?

I'm in Chicago. So far so good.

I was told by a AT&T rep that they are moving to an open system with no locked phones - I even asked the question, "so in 2 years I could take this phone and move to Cingular?" She said yes but I have a feeling that may not be true.

i think that would be fair, considering that one of the benefits of GSM service is the ability to use different phones with the GSM card. How is the service in Chicago; in Dallas, it sucks, only parts of the city are covered and once you travel outside the main city limits there is no covereage.... yet

I've been really impressed with the service in Chicago thus far. In the city to the far suburbs I have yet to find a place with no signal.

My only worry is that it will take time for other major midwest cities to come online. Detroit and Indy went up last month. Supposedly Milkwaukee and St. Louis will be up in the not too distant future.

Hmmmmm, IT DOES NOT MATTER IF THEY LOCK THE PHONE. There are lot of "friendly" shops that you can unlock it in. A bunch of my friends have done this in Glasgow, Scottland. Just ask nicely and buy something from them. Yezzz....
