hi guys...
i simply love the sony ericsson t610 and will be buying it in a couple of days. i'm confused as to buy an infrared adaptor or a bluetooth adaptor for connectivity.
which one has faster file tranfer rate and can i transfer games and java applications with both? which one would be the better buy feature wise, my major concern is data transfer speed ofcourse.
thanx for ur inputs in advance.

With all the problems it seems people (including myself!) have with trying to configure bluetooth, I'd probably say go with IR!

Bluetooth would be my clear choice! I bought a TDK BT dongle and it works just great! Their phonebook editing SW v3.4 doesn't work well with T610, but the new v3.5 available for download works just fine.
I transfer games and whatever, no problems at all. Very convenient not to have to take the phone out of my pocket to send things to it, or even to copy pictures from it. Good SW, neat technology. Go BT!

thanx for sharing ur thoughts guys. i'm certainly much more inclined towards bluetooth now.
btw has anyone checked out the usb data cable? how would data transfer speed using a data cable compare with bluetooth? i pressume it should be faster with a usb data cable... if there is a major difference in transfer rates then i might buy a data cable along with a bluetooth adaptor as well.
thanx again.

Go for Bluetooth as all your future phones will be BT compatible, BTW a data cable is only ONE WAY. With BT or IR you can send from phone to PC & PC to phone.

One way? what kind of cable is that? the standard SE data cable and the modified data cables that i have used are definitely TWO-WAY

I personally use an MSI6967 bluetooth adapter, which I heartily recommend to anyone looking for a BT adapter. I've seen much smaller class 1 adapters recently, but when I got it then, it was the only one available in it's class.
I have recently seen a small class-1 adapter recenlty. a billionton adatper with an antenna which is quite small and handy. i havent tried it, but the package is quite small, and you might like the form factor.

pachy, im confused by what you said.... a datacable is only ONE way?? how so?? when i put my p800 in its cradle i can install software to it (pc>p800) ... i can also make a backup of my phone details (p800>pc). im not having a rant... just wondering what you meant.
keeping on topic.... bluetooth is the way to go if you intend to link to your t610 and might purchase other bluetooth enabled devices in the future..
like someone said before, not many other phones have bluetooth, so if you want wide compatability.... say you have several (out dated) phones go for IR.. be prepared to line up each device to the IR unit though!
dont be too bothered about which one is faster... its not like you are transfering gigs of data...
personally i recommend the MSI Bluetooth Key (£26), available at:

edit:
uhhh.. u beat me to it.... worst still, it looks like it took be 10mins to write the latter. oh well....

i know i won't be transferring gigs of data... but i currently have a t68i and a ma620 and call me finicky but even the 15-20 sec wait for transferring themes etc.. seems to be too long. i get real irritated when i want to transfer a lot of themes or screensavers n check them out... and with the 610 i'll be tranferring polyphonic tones too, so if the data cable tranfer is lightening fast then i'll buy a bluetooth adaptor for everyday small stuff synchronizing and the data cable when i'm in the mood for a little more uploading/downloading
i might get my 610 in a few days now... went yesterday but only to find a week 19 phone , but will hopefully get a week 21 or later in a few days:) and i just can't wait to lay my hands on it.
coming back to my question, somebody pls clear my doubt - is there a real huge difference in the data transfer speeds when connecting to the pc with a bluetooth adaptor and when connecting with a usb data cable?
thanx again for ur inputs guys... i really appreciate it. |

hmm .. 15-20secs for transferring themes? that's kinda long.
