Hi!
After nobody on this site gave me even a single technical specification in which SE T610 beats Nokia 3650 (everyone stated that Nokia 3650 is much better featurewise, but is ugly and bulky), I tried to enquire locally. Here is what the SE T610 lovers claim as additional points (besides the commonly known ones like 65 K colours, smaller size, better batery etc.):
1. SE T610 can play up to 32 instruments while playing polyphonic ring tones, the number of such instruments on Nokia 3650 is limited. Thus you get true tones on SE T610/ 310, but on Nokia 3650 you do not.

2. The camera of SE T610 has an option for pictures in low light, Nokia 3650 does not.

3. Better HSCSD speed

4. Faster modem

Can anyone confirm or rebut any of these points? The truth must come out.

1 may be correct for midis, i can't remember the full series 60 specs, but since the series 60 will do mp3 playback (3rd party) and can use WAVs for ringtones, it is really irrelevant as they best the T610 by a sizable margin - but what else would you expect?

2 is wrong, the series 60's all have a low light option (plus the best mobile camera out there, i regret to say - better than my P800 even).

3 is wrong, HSCSD is a fixed speed, usually just double CSD so is 14.4k (can differ depending upon network, but both phones will do all CSD speeds).

4 is wrong if you are looking at CSD or HSCSD. As for GPRS, the T610 may have a slightly faster up/down ratio, i can't comment.

But why are you even comparing these phones? One is a smartphone, one is a phone, they are aimed at totally different markets and end user functionality. No one should be asking 'should i get a 3650 or a T610' - you simply need to know if you want a music/gaming/power smartdevice, or if you want a cameraphone - and then the choice is made for you. It is not fair to compare the T610 to series 60's (7650/3650/6600), it is better to look at the PDA/phone of the P800 against them - but even that is not a fair comparison, in the other direction.

I may be comparing phones from 2 dissimilar classes (smart phone versus a phone). But then Nokia 3650 is working out to be cheaper than SE T610.

About the number midi cords in Nokia 3650, I have still not got a clear answer. Is it true that series 60 nokia phones can play only 4 midi cords as against 32 in T610?

If Nokia 3650 can play mp3 and wav files, can I just transfer these files from my PC using IR port and then set these as ring tones? It will only occupy more memory space in Nokia 3650, which I have in plenty in it. similarly, I can probably convert 32 cord midi files into wav files on my PC and play the same as ring tones (after transferring the same using IR). Is that correct?

No, it's not true about 4-chord midis on nokia series 60's. The series 40's only have 4-chord (7210, 6610, 5100, 6100, 7250 etc) but the series 60's have 16/24/32 - can't remember which, but think it's 16.

As for beaming stuff - you should go ask these questions to people on HoFo who actually have the phone so should know! But yes you can beam audio files across - you might want to get a card reader though, as transfer will be much faster, and also the 3650 MIGHT be like some phones, where you can only beam files to the phone memory and then move to the MMC afterward. That would mean that you'd need to keep all phone memory clear, and you could only send 3MB files across, unless you took out the MMC and put it in a card reader, to transfer files directly to it instead of via the phone. (Moto A830 etc are like this; as i said, i don't know about the nokia.)

Don't think you can use mp3s as ringtones, only wavs to my knowledge

sanjg2k02 - Its still unfair to compare the T610 and 3650, as the T610 is a brand new phone, and as such will see price drops after a few months. The 3650 has already been out for a while, and has seen several price drops, hence why its cheaper than the T610.

If you like the 3650, then buy it. If you like the T610 then buy it. They are 2 completely different phones from two different manufacturers, so its like trying to compare apples and oranges...they both have their good and bad points.

Hi!
1. I agree with Demon that there may be more some features in SE T610 that are better than Nokia 3650. But can you please tell me a few points (in addition to the ones that I have already written) that weigh in favour of SE T610?

2. I am indeed thankful to Simon for a very comprehansive reply. Even if Nokia 3650 has 24 midi cords as against 32 in SE T310 or T610. But can the ring tones available at http://clubsonyericsson.com/resources/ringtones/t300_ringtones.zip be played on Nokia 3650? I find these tones available at Sonyericssonclub of exceptional quality. How do I know which ones have 24 midi cords and which ones have more? Moreover, I do not really know what Hofo is. Can you tell me?

3. Is there no concept of themes in Nokia 3650?

4. Can midi files be converted in to wav files on a PC? Which software should be used for this purpose?

It's fairly simple...

If you favour smaller size, look at the T610 and the 7250.

If you favour functionality, look at the P800 and 3650.

Make that decision first.

2. Any .mid file should work as a ring tone the only thing being if there are more cords or instruments not supported by the phone they may sound odd. If you find a pc based midi player you can see what and how many instruments are used.

that 3650 dont look have bad bit too big and bulky true but then it does do mp3s and think it says divx playback even!

Its got a memory slot so... way cool, wish the T610 had a memory slot shove in a 64meg stick or 512meg stick and store mp3s/pix or whatever on it...

but then guess thats what smartphones are for..
