here are the reviews:
While Sony’s CLIE PEG-N760C is one of the most expensive handhelds running the Palm operating system, it’s still cheaper than most PDAs based on Microsoft’s Pocket PC operating system. With its high-resolution screen, MP3 music playback, and expandability, it offers most of the advantages of the more expensive Pocket PCs, with the added bonus of the ability to run any of the more than 14,000 programs written for the Palm OS.
This CLIE features the best screen of any PDA, bar none. Not only does it offer tons of details and sharp text with its 320x320-pixel resolution, but with 65,000 colors it does an amazing job of displaying pictures, animations, and game graphics. Sony bundles PictureGear image management software and the gMovie animation player so you can load your CLIE up with snapshots--or even short videos--of the kids.
The N760C uses a built-in rechargeable battery that typically lasts about two weeks under normal usage (less if you listen to lots of music). Another bonus feature is a jog dial and a navigation button, which work together to let you look up data with one hand.
This PDA is acoustically impressive. It sports a built-in MP3 music player, complete with a wired remote control and a small pair of earphones. You can listen to music while running other programs, or shut down the screen to save power and extend your music listening time to up to 12 hours.
Of course, with only 8MB of memory built in, there’s not really any room for music or animation files. Sony includes an 8MB Memory Stick--a slick little expansion card slightly smaller than a stick of chewing gum--but this is mostly useful for storing Palm OS programs, which are noted for their compactness. For music and animation, you’ll want a larger stick; they’re currently available at sizes up to 128MB, room for two hours of CD-quality music. Sony promises a number of other Memory Stick modules will be available soon; currently, the company sells a tiny $150 digital camera Memory Stick expansion for the CLIE.
This CLIE looks good, sounds good, and runs the largest library of PDA applications in existence. Only those looking for a Game Boy replacement in addition to PDA functions will want to look elsewhere.
