the 802,11a or 802.11b or 802.11g is Wi-Fi and the P800 does not support Wi-Fi
so you cant do it |

802.11b, also known as Wi-Fi is the new wireless networking standard. (There are also other standards, wih the new 802.11g, also known as 54G that is 5 times faster than 802.11b - this runs at 11MBits).
Basically if you have a laptop that supports Wi-Fi you can hook up to any wireless access point. I believe that Starbucks are putting this in all their cafés, and a number of hotels and airports are following suit. I bought myself a Linksys wireless router, which means that I could surf the net, check email and even videoconference from my laptop while in the garden!
Intel are latching onto this with their new Centrino brand. From what I understand this is effectively the same as 802.11b - just Intel bundling it with motherboards to ensure that people choose it over AMD and a separate network card (but I could be wrong - does anyone know different?)
Still, to bring it back to P800, in theory you could be in your garden, with your P800 connected to your wireless laptop which has access to the web... But Wi-Fi and P800 directly are incompatible. |

Hi,
802.11b it was,
There were a few Starbucks in London running a free trial thru T-mobile, but when I got round to trying it out they wanted to charge something like 5 pounds per hour..
Crazy greedy marketing! If they gave you a free 1/2 hour access with each coffee they could pack the places all day...
After all 1 adsl connection costs ~ 20 pounds / month

@roygbiv - yes you could surf via BT and someone elses laptop - but they would need to have the SE sync software installed etc.

i'm looking at BT access points as a substitute for WiFi but with the P800 not being able to BT initiate it's even more difficult !
hopefully this might be something that gets fixed with a FM update .... |

Just a question about this...
I know that the P800 cannot initiate the BT connection for the SE sync software, but surely this is a failure of the SE software, not the P800. When using the Bemused software that controls WinAmp, I am able to disconnect, and reconnect as necessary from my P800 whenever I want to control the music. As long as the server is running on the desktop listening on that port, all you need to do is open the connection from the phone.
If SE pulled their finger out, they could do this for the PC Suite surely? |

hehe not at all no. was just commenting on the procedures for wireless surfing via BT instead of 802.11b ....
@julianmclean
yes I suppose you're right if you have BT software that can auto-connect a specific device.
my TDK card/software could do this but now using a Vaio i can't auto-connect any device.
As far as I know the p800 can't initiate a connection to any device other than by turning BT on/off as described above.
