I regularly use my P800 to collect my emails- i just wanted to ask if anyone knows of any anti-virus software for the P800 as some clever spark is bombarding me virus-ridden e-mails. My antivirus software on my PC catches these mails before any damage is done and my mail sever blocks virused mails most of the time. I really worried i might upload a virus onto my P800. Any ant-virus software available? |

None at the moment... but so far, there are no virii that can seriously infect Symbian devices. |

Most viruses work though outlook / outlook express and can only infect windows based pc's
the chances of someone writing one to effect symbian devices is highly unlikly.. just not enough devices to spread between, unlike windows where 90% of email his an outlook variant!
so long as you you real time scanning on the pc/s you sync with you should be ok!

hi guys,
i rather see other unwanted things coming up with apps you dont control:
UNWANTED TRAFFIC
Example:
MiniGPS I defined an event sending out an SMS when going out for lunch to a dedicated place, and another event SMS notification when leaving that place.
Unfortunately, I put it to one GSM cell ID only. When i was there, my p800 booked into that cell but randomly jumped into neighbor cells back and forth.
The SMS was supposed to inform my colleague.
Guess what happened: Half an hour later i got a call from him and he asked me what i was doing on him...
i sent like 150 SMS within 30 mins, and another 25 were waiting to be sent out...
Fact is i didnt notice anything on my p800. you might say "your own fault" and you are probably true.
the point i am trying to make is that a malicious app can easily send out SMS or use GPRS bandwidth without u noticing it!!
that can harm the whole terminal industry and new biz potential...

Ah yes this is not a virus though, it is rather an event that you have actually requested to happen when you get within that cell..
the problem is more that you are in an area with more than 1 cell (common) and your phone is moving between the cells (normal)
the problem is simply that miniGPS has no means of saying only carry the action out again if a certain lime period has elapsed
maybe someone should request ammending the software?

i know that this miniGPS is not a virus...
the point i was trying to make is, that with tools like miniGPS you can generate unattended traffic which you dont even notice!
imagine premium sms been generated and you pay for something you dont wanna pay for!
this is way more harmful as this affects your own wallet as you are paying in cash with your monthly bill for it, not only "just" losing a few emails etc...
this will generate a new "class" of malicious code, comparable to dialer s/w known today on pc.

You should group cells in a given area and have the event triggered by the GROUP, not an individual cell. |
