GPS Navigation on P800 |

My hopes that I would soon have my P800 as the only device I need have drawn a blank. I spoke with tomtom about their bluetooth nav option, and whilst the DEVICE can talk to a P800, they have no fixed plans to port Navigator 2 to a P800.
I then called Gate5.de who explained that their product is really a city guide - so prior to a trip abroad you can download content to make your trip more interesting. They said IF they develop a Nav option it would be 2004 at the earliest.
Anybody else got any ideas for P800 GPS Nav solutions?
Regards

check out www.wayfinder.biz
and their shop www.wayfindershop.com
if you click on the 'om wayfinder system' link on the left in the shop site, there is a photo of the P800 with nav software on it, however, being from the UK, I only speak 1 language, and that site isn't in it

Hello!
Yes, we plan to have a P800 version ready in June-July. At the same time Wayfinder will be available on the Italian market.

Will this require an external GPS add-on?
Which countries will be supported??? |

But if you do read what IS in English then the wayfinder service isn't what i am looking for either.
The Wayfinder service will ask you to enter your destination, then their servers will download YOUR route via GPRS/GSM from THEIR servers. How much will that cost?
I want a product that does'nt cost me everytime I use it. Sorry wayfinder - you're not what I want. |

Here is a review of Wayfinder, for those of you who understand Norwegian... I will write a summary in English when I get time.

OK, here's a quick and dirty translation/summary of the review:
-----
The EMTAC GPS receiver and a Nokia 7650 were used in this review.
The Wayfinder application has six screens. Four of them are used to choose your destination. You can select from a list of stored destinations or view information about the call center (from where your phone is getting its data).
There is also a search screen where you tell the app in which country and city your destination. When searching, the phone contacts Wayfinder's database via GPRS, and a list of possible hits is returned.
When you have decided where to go, the phone calculates the route to the destination. A separate screen gives you the directions by the use of arrows and symbols. The distance to your next turn is also displayed. The name of the street you're in is displayed at the bottom of this screen.
The phone will automatically calculate an alternative route if you miss a turn or decide not to follow the phone's directions.
You can also have voice directions which will tell you how far it is to your next turn or estimated time of arrival. The directions are very clear. They can be switched off if you want.
Roundabouts, one-way streets, blind alleys and short streets did not cause any trouble for the software.
Using your mobile phone is much cheaper than buying a complete kit for you car, but you won't get a big screen or a map display. There's also a subscription fee, but what you get in return are directions that are always up to date.
Wayfinder's database does not (always) know about house numbers, so you might experience ending up in the middle of the street you set as your destination.
Pros:
- No installation necessary
- Accurate directions
- Low memory consumption
- Can be carried in (and used from) your pocket
Cons:
- Does not display the route on a map (planned in next version)
- Summary missing (travel time, distance travelled)

A couple of updates. If you have a look at the Wayfinder demo on their website (http://www.wayfinder.biz/flashdemo.htm), it clearly states that the P800 version will be available from June 30 (although it remains to be seen). The demonstration also shows that the application has a map view, so it's probably been updated after the review above was written.
One thing remains a bit foggy: If you buy the Swedish version of the software, will you just have access to Swedish maps/addresses, or will I be allowed to download maps for i.e. Britain or France? Can I get rid of my A to Z? |

wayfinder is nice but why not use telmap (http://www.telmap.co.il) they claim to already have a p800 version, I talked to them on the phone and they said that they currently have solutions for Europe (which doesn't really help me cause I need the maps and GPS for the Middle East and the US) but they said they would consider me for beta testing in the US, I'll post any updates ..... |

Thanks for the tip, kaaspad. Did they say anything about price? Is there a subscription fee? The web site doesn't say very much about where I can buy it, either. |

apparently their system works with or without a GPS module, it can work stand alone, via GSM crisscross or with a GPS module. The maps can be prestored on the device or downloaded in realtime, but they are apparently very small files. I wrote the marketing dept. there and they answer pretty fast, you should write them with any questions you have |

Ok, here are my 2 cents worth on this old topic of interest...
I originally wanted a GPS option as well on my P800... I thought it would be great to have a Bluetooth GPS receiver on the roof of my car, sending signals to my P800 in its car cradle, directing me where to go... then there was a Bluetooth GPS module available... I thought, "Ok, now all we need to wait for is software support"... but then I realized that this setup is actually worse than buying a dedicated Garmin GPS receiver.
First of all, Garmin is one of the best GPS makers on the market. They are used in planes, boats, and other heavy duty environments. I believe the GPS systems built into Mercs and Bimmers are by Garmin as well.
Now, my thinking is this... if I had a GPS on my P800... for about the same price as a fully featured color screen Garmin Street Pilot... would it out perform the Garmin? Or would it just be an expensive "geek" solution, just to be able to say "Hey! My P800 has GPS"... I realized that this is one area that a BT GPS would fall very short of a similarly priced Garmin dashmounted unit.
As much as I love my P800... and everything it can do... unless the price of the BT GPS receivers drops BELOW US$200... I'm sticking with Garmin. (Yes, I bought the Garmin instead.. reception is much better, it can be battery powered, hand-held, and it's water resistant)
So, for those of you dying for BT GPS... you can get a much better GPS system from either Garmin or Magellan for the same price as the BT GPS receivers... and they work.
There... just my 2 cents worth... now, if all you want is a GPS system on your P800... no matter how poorly it performs... then you can wait for SW support for the few BT GPS units out on the market.. I'm sure the software won't be that far off. |
