Broken Volume Control |

I'm hoping someone here can help me out.
I'm on a monthly contract and I upgraded my phone to a T68i about 2 months ago.
I dropped the phone last week and have broken the volume control off. I've spoken to O2 (who I have my contract with) and they aren't able to help me; I'm not entitled to another subsidised upgrade until I have had my phone for 12 months.
Basically, it's going to cost me 180 quid to go out and buy another T68i just because I've broken my volume control.
I've opened the phone up and looked at the damage inside. The volume control slider switch is actually completely smashed off the circuit board inside. I'm a whizz with the soldering iron, but I think it's beyond repair.
I can change the ring volume from the menus - but how can I change the earpiece volume for when I receive a call? At the moment I can barely hear people I ring. If I could get the volume up a bit I could survive with the damaged phone until I'm entitled to an upgrade again.
Thanks in anticipation! Lot's of virtual beer to anyone who can help!

Phone up O2 and tell them they are idiots. you are entitiled to a years manufacturers warranty.
Best thing to do would be to bypass crappy O2 alltogether and take it to your local carphone warehouse (as long as it it a service centre).
They will sort it all out for you.

Thanks for those suggestions.
Unfortunately, the manufacturers warranty only covers manufacturing defects and not accidental damage (ie. it was my fault I dropped it, not the manufacturers, therefore why should they pay for it?!).
The circuit board itself is damaged where the volume control slider switch fits, so simply buying a new switch is not going to help me.
I guess the "Genuine Original Ericsson Housing. Complete with rear / chassis." at 26 quid is not going to include the circuit board
Keep those ideas coming!

Thought you said you were an expert with the old soldering iron You could always look on Google for a T68 with a broken display or something to use as a parts donor. |

I'm on my 3rd handset, the two previous units had this problem, I didn't drop them, the first one fell off when I placed it on the table and the 2nd fell off whilst the phone was in my pocket.
Can't help you with the earpice volume I'm afraid, I didn't have to put up the broken units for long, I called Orange straight away and told them that their units were faulty and they replaced them the following day.
£5 a month insurance doesn't sound all the expensive now after hearing your problem. Good luck. |
