Works for all pictures.
I did a test where I used a 800x600 px picture as a contact, and the contact database grew with just a few kB.

I think the best resolution for a contact picture is 208x144.

It's just a waste of time to resize your contact pictures since as soon as you attach them to a contact, they will be resized and moved to the contact database, automaticly. It will make no difference what so ever if the original picture was 300x300px or 9000x9000px.
As mentioned above, you don't even need to keep the picture on your phone afterwards!

Actually, I don't agree, becaue if you for instance set a picture of 300x300 as a contact photo, the phone will change its resolution to the resolution it can display (208x144) - which has a totaly different ratio. This can be done by CROPING, CHANGING THE RATIO, OR RESIZING. SO in case of 300x300 - the picture would be resized to 144x144 (which is to small) to maintain the correct ratio . By changing the ratio you will get distorted picture and bye croping maybe half of the face will be cut off... (I'm not sure which method the phone uses). Therefore I think it is best that the picture has the correct ratio.

Try to use Sony Ericsson Image Editor it's a good tool to resize your images to ones fit the screen size with lower size.

I believe the maximum picture size is 206x197.

How did I come to this conclusion? Well, I made a very narrow, but tall picture, assigned it to a contact and made a snapshot of the screen. Then I made a wide, but low picture, and repeated the process.

I opened both screenshots in Photoshop and checked the sizes. The wide one was 206, the tall one 197.

That's how simple it is to find out the max size of the Caller ID
