A friend and i were talking about this the other day:
A lot of smaller companies are coming out onto the market making some pretty decent phones. But they charge a premium for their phones. I'm sure it wouldnt cost upwards of $500 to make/market a phone but many of them charge $1000. IF you were a small company wouldnt you sell the phone for $600 and get more customers and goodwill to your brand?
Another example of this is the P800. In australia it costs $1300, whereas the 7650 costs $900. If the P800 was cheaper it would gain a LOT more market as it could directly compete with Nokia. In a recent report Nokia had 57% of the converged devices (with 7650, 3650, 9210i) market while SE had 11% for the P800 only.

you cant compare the 7650 with a p800, its like comparing david and goliath... and whats this thing about SE being a small company... or did i just miss the point |

no i didnt mean SE is a small company....but it is a company that is losing market share at an alarming pace. why not make its phones cheaper for the consumer? |

If SE is accumulating losses (as reported in numerous papers...), why the heck would they risk greater losses?
Nokia can make those prices because their production is in much bigger numbers than SE, wich allows them to reduce the cost for each unit.
SE can just compete in terms of phones features not in phone prices.

It's the way of phones, I think. An innovation is made and phones look different, then a lot of very similar phones come out.
For example, the shift from the old Nokia 5110 design to the 3xxx series - look how many clones of that design they have made.
I do think that the design is quite nice. Someone mentioned it was part of a trend that is mainly currently in Japan - a blocky kinda thing. You like it or you love it.

I personally prefer the blocky look than the over-styled Nokia's. They looks like a Picasso-picture....

i personally prefer the Sony Ericsson looks over the nokias, because what's simple is true, and what's true is beautiful, ullgh, i sound like some silly poet... hehe... I really dont think nokia phone looks good in any way, and i dont think they exaggerate style.. because their phones are plain ugly, except for some like the 7650, and the n gage |

Sony Ericsson doesn't get much recognition here in Australia.... I think there are 2 people in my school with Sony Ericssons.... me and my mate.... T300 (me) T68i (him).
When ya talk about Sony Ericsson people diss them to shit house.... people think Nokia is better, without even trying the phones!
So Sony Ericsson NEED to release some good looking, nicely styled phones, not blocky brick looking pieces of crap!
I wouldn't even say the P800 was a nice looking phone.... quite the opposite.
T300 Is My LIFE.... Now I want a nokia Camera Phone |
