The only model T68's we seem to get in Australia are the Malaysian made phones. From what I read are they have the most problems (microphone, keypad lights).

As I want to get a phone that is as perfect as possible, what manufacture weeks are good and which ones are to be avoided for Malaysian manufactured phones?

Here is the info I have from my retailers:

- The IMEI starts with 350324-71 (Malaysian, even though their distributor says they're assembled in Sweden).
- The box says Sony Ericsson
- Doesn't say where it's made (says made by Ericsson).

What do you think?

If you're that scared, why don't you order one from UK or something and get it sent out? You'll get your VAT back, so it won't be that expensive...

Try www.expansys.com

If the box says it might be a T68i, ive never heard of "ordinary" T68m in a box.
Do you know which colors the phones are available in?
If im not wrong the key pad lumi. problem was taken care of by hardware R3A.
So I dont think theres much to do, then buy one and if it starts acting (like it Ericssons SW in it ) - go to your nearest SP an upgrade it.

I would suggest not jumping to any conclusions about malaysian made t68s' because i haven't had a problem with mine at all.

I have the same IMEI, but mine wasn't labelled on the box.

You only hear about the worst cases, hardly ever about the phones that have no problems as all.

I shoudl just contact Ericsson and ask them the questions directly.

To Fingers and arroyootje, if I bought from www.expansys.com, it would cost me the same as buying locally as we have a GST here (like the UK VAT but only 10%) + shipping & insurance.

To mrNoodles: The phones aren't the T68i model as the only colours available are Lunar Grey and Gold.

Supposedly there is a sticker on the box which states that there is a free software upgrade included. Don't know if this is the MMS SW or not.

The matter of an upgrade isn't a problem, you normally get a year of warranty and that includes software upgrades and all that.

Something funny bout your boxset. [addsig]

I think that you dont should worry, just buy a phone in a color you like!
And if there is any problems with it you can always update your SW for FREE 1 year from the purchase.
And regarding the sticker or not, you will get your MMS update!

Maybe you should wait until the T68i comes out... Then you can be the one to tell us all about it

The T68e only made an appearance about two weeks ago in Australia. At this rate it'll be 3-6 months before be see a T68i in the flesh.

I just called up SonyEricsson. They have no idea about what HW version they are shipping, what the manufacturer dates are, they don't even know that there are some problem T68's out there. They kept on telling me that the phone is shipped with the latest code (I bet you it's not MMS).

The supervisor was interested in knowing how I got all this info. I just pointed him to esato.com. He'll have a lot of reading to do.

They have a T68 that they use for support and its hardware is R1A and was manufactured in week 37 / 2001. I think they've had it for a while.

I'm just gonna go out and buy the Gold one. I think I research things too much sometimes.

Im sure you will be satisfied with it! And should there be any problem you have a lot o T68 owners "backing you up" here on http://www.esato.com

The most common problem that appears it SW related, and is solved by getting it upgraded, for FREE from one year from the purchase.

Is your T68 called T68e in Australia?

I believe it's just a T68. No 'e' or 'm' as in some countries.

I don't think they want to confuse the Aussie consumer......

I bought my T68 from carphone whorehouse, and they advised me to go to another branch to get a malaysian one, as they didnt have any in stock. according to the guy there it is the Swedish made ones that are prone to having problems!

I bought my T68 in Malaysia. The last time I had problem was bad connection Between T68 and HBH-10. Since upgraded T68 firmware to R2B, I have no futher problem
--------------------------
Not all Malaysian products are bad. If you can just open up your PC or Notebook right now , I can bet your Pentium III or IV and/or any computer parts is probably made in Malaysia
---------------------------
As for me, Australian manufactured products are all good including my academic degree from University of Melbourne

cheers
