if you signed a contract with your service provider and the contract is up you can call them up and request an unlock code and they will give it to you, also if your contract is not up you can call them and ask to speak to a tech and try to talk him in to filling out a request form for the unlock code.

Obviously this works for some networks in some countries. Some coutries require networks to unlock phones after a certain period of time, by law. Some netowrks would never unlock the phones unless you pay an unlocking fee regardless of contract duration.

You're right. Not all networks do that. T-Mobile USA will unlock your phone for free even if you're still under contract with them. AT&T on the other hand NEVER unlocks their phones even if your contract has expired already.

silent:

you are right about at&t being b!tc#e$ about unlocking, i've asked them several times.
but i just unlocked my at&t t68i last week, for about 25 bucks total, after software/serial cable purchase, now i feel a deep, profound, emotion of "HA!" directed towards at&t

Price of a T28 service cable: 17$

Price of one unlock credit from gsmphonesource: 8$

Price of unlocking software: free

incredible satisfaction at thwarting at&t's monopolistic tendencies: priceless

Here in australia Vodafone and Telstra no longer lock their phones (they advertise them as lock-free). I'm not sure about Optus or the other networks. I remember when I had to unlock my Siemens C55 from germany. I paid $90 for the data cable, then 6 months later I wanted to update software and it relocked once the software was updated. But I eventually got the lock off. Its a lot better without locks. I know that in Australia you can go to a service centre and pay them to unlock your phone.

I was in australia a while ago, and while many service centers will unlock your phone, the cheapes I found was about 60 AUS dollars, about 40 US dollars. So it is a bit cheaper just to do it yourself

I've had alot of people emailing me asking details about unlocking their T68i. This is absolutely fine, I have no problem helpin people out. I'm actually thinking now about making a webpage, for people like esato users; a guide to unlocking your phone, since I've have a decent amount of experience with various unlocking services.
If this sounds like a good idea, please let me know
