Hi all

Sorry to bring up a topic that's been "done-to-death", but I just have a couple of questions regarding software update for T68i.

1) My current software is R2E006. An annoying problem I find with the phone is that the "cell information" seems to dissappear after a while. It only re-appears either when I turn the phone off and on again, or re-activate cell information (even though it is already activated). Is this a problem that is fixed in software updates (i.e. R6 and R7 updates)?

2) I only bought the phone 2 weeks ago. Is it odd that quite an old software version is on the phone? The software is customised (i.e. WAP settings etc.) to my service provider (Telstra), will the customisation be lost when I upgrade?

3) Is it possible to upgrade the phone myself using the T68i USB cable? I have read the many posts regarding this issue, and I know that many say it is not possible to flash the phone using a 'data' cable (i.e. need a flash cable), but I have not read specifically about serial/USB data cables.

Thanks in advance people.

it's best done by the local, authorized service point. it is free for phones under warranty.

Dawsman, guessing that you are using Telstra I will assume you are in Oz. I also have the R6A Firmware (phone is less than 1 month old). Did you manage to find where to get it upgraded for free ?

By the Cell Information, is this similar to the Nokia system which displays which phone tower you are connected to, if so I can not get any information on the screen apart from Telstra Mobile at the top. I have tried turning it on and off and then turning the phone on/off no changes. What am I meant to be seeing with cell information turned on?

Yes, I'm in Perth, WA

I'm going to try Accord Customer Care Solutions, they upgraded my old nokia 8210 for free when I had it, so they should be able to do my T68i (they are an authorised SonyEricsson repairer, available worldwide). I'll let you know how I go.

Yes, the cell info is similar to the Nokia system. I have "Telstra" written on the top (always when I have service), and then the cell I am using (Suburb) written underneath (when it is working).

On the menu, it is under Messages, Area Info, Cell Information.

I don't understand why my software is R2 and yours is R6. Did your phone have the Telstra WAP settings etc. pre-installed??

I am also in Perth and purchased the phone under the latest Telstra offer where the phone was free.

I think my firmware is version R6A012 (Thats what appears when doing the service access strokes).

If I turn on cell information I dont get the suburb information at all, I have only ever got the Telstra Mobile.

Yes, the phone came pre configured for WAP and GPRS with all three carriers. I have only used the GPRS with Telstra (just about to finish my 1 month free trial). Dont think I will use it much after that. Have also sent emails using a telstra email address, but typing is very slow on the phone.

Have got the sync with Outlook working using a Belkin Bluetooth dongle at work. My WinXP machine refuses to work at home- wont show any services available with the BT. Nearly at the stage to try a complete format of the drive.

Also have a friend who has the HBH-60 headset and will try that sometime in the next month.

I am interest to see how you go with the update and if it makes a difference.

Just bring your phone to your nearest SE service centre for software upgrade, make sure you bring your purchase receipt ! Also, normally the upgrade won't master reset your phone so your stuffs still there, but for safe, it is better to backup all your user data like own backgrounds, phone numbers on the phone memory, calendar notes, code memo etc, so even if they master reset your phone after upgrade, you can simply send back yo the phone ! With regards to the Telstra wap, MMS configuration stuff, you can simply go to Sony Ericsson Australia website, click on wap configurator, choose your operator etc, it will simply send your the configuration over the air, the when your phone receive it, simply click yes, and it will install those configuration for you !! Cheers mate !

I don't think you'll need to worry about the upgrade if your software is R6A012. The only upgrade higher than yours is the R7A013, and I don't think it is necessary, it probably isn't available in service centres here yet anyway.

I don't know why your cell info doesn't display the suburb. Perhaps it's either your sim card, or maybe the later software changed this feature.

I also bought my phone on the Telstra $30 plan for free, and It was about a month ago. I can't understand why I have older software (R2E006) than you! If you don't mind me asking, where did you buy your phone? (I got mine from the Telstra shop in Carousel).

Cheers

Telstra shop at Garden City at the end of the March.

I cant work out why cell information wont work, I had it on my old 3310. Might ring SE and ask, but it does not really worry me

Well, I finally got my software upgraded...

to R8A015 (from R2E006)

Menu navigation is quite a bit faster, 4 new games, cell information appears to be working 100% now, carrier says "Telstra Mobile" instead of just "Telstra".

There was mention of a new option under the Bluetooth menu in the R8A015 thread, but mine doesn't seem to have this.

Got it done at AccordCCS - 26 Plain St EAST PERTH, for free under warranty. I didn't even need my contract - the guy just checked some details in the phone and he could tell how old it was!

Hope this info is useful (even though it's so late!)
