Inadvertent touch tones when talking |

When I'm talking on my P800 held to my face with the flip closed, the phone beeps every minute or two and displays a number, as if I have pressed a key. It's usually a 6 or 3.
The thing is, I am not pressing the keys. It takes a bit of effort to press the keys, and you can feel a little "click" when you press them, and I am not pressing it up against my face nearly hard enough to do that. In fact, I've tried mashing it against my face and can't get the keys to press.
Before I send it back to SE, I wanted to see if anyone else has had this problem and possibly fixed it. My phone rev is R1D.
Thanks |

itīs not the click sound that indicates that u have talked one more minute?
i belive u can turn it off if thats the problem
if there is an other problem u should probably contact a service point.

I have exactly the same thing - I had assumed that I must be pressing it but was fairly sure I wasn't....
I wonder what the answer is??
Regularly at the end of a call i go to press OK and find theres numbers on the screen which means it does something different again.

I got this too, it's the touchscreen thinking you touch something, while it is just your cheek doing it!
bah, not an issue to me |

Thanks for the responses, it's good to see some other people experience the same thing. The people I'm talking to on my phone don't like the loud touchtone beeps in their ears, understandably.
I'm going to call SE and ask about it, and perhaps send it to a service center.

Let us know what they say as it happens with mine as well. |

Dirkies: I understand your point, but with the flip closed, the only part of the touch screen that's active is the part under the keypad, and I'd have to press one of the the keys hard enough with my cheek to activate it, which is fairly hard, and I get the tones even though I hold the phone as lightly against my face as I can manage. It definitely shouldn't be registering a keypress. I have had dozens of cell phones, and I haven't had this problem with any of them.
I called SE, and the tech suppt was no help. He transferred me to repair who told me how to send it in to get checked, so I guess I'll do that, but I'm not too optimistic.
I have always though it makes more sense to put the earpiece and microphone on the side of the phone opposite the keypad and display, but no one seems to do it. |

It is definitely the keys being pressed! The same happens to too many people for it to be coincidence. I wouldn't bother wasting the time to send it back. That it still happens in f/c mode is due to the fact that the touchscreen still works the same with the flip on, but via the rubber underneath the keys, so it wouldn't take much to register a keypress.
Just another sacrifice we'll have to live with in then pursuit of mobile perfection!

Maybe it is the keys being pressed. The problem is, the keys (or the touchscreen beneath them) are responding to a very slight pressure which is far less than what is normally required to activate a key. You should have to press the key hard enough for it to make that clicking response you can feel through your fingertips.
The keys shouldn't respond without a reasonably firm push. That's the case with all the other phones I have used and still use, with the exception of this P800, which frequently goes off with just a feather-light brush of the keypad during a call. That's faulty behavior. |

Totally agree - it shouldn't be that way. Bear in mind though, that the P800 is not reqally the same as any other phone you may have used before. The touchscreen creates it's own set of problems, as do other features of this phone, but it's something that only the individual can decide whether they are prepared to put up with the bad for the good.
Personally, I'll stick with mine 'cos I don't think it's a long way from everything I could want in a phone. But we're not all the same - otherwise it would be a pretty boring world, huh?!

I called SE to check the status of my phone, and they said a part is being replaced. The person on the phone didn't know what part. I guess I'll find out when I get the phone back, hopefully this week.
This seems to indicate that the "ghost" key presses are due to a phone defect. |
