P800 on O2 or Orange? |

I going to upgrade my T68i on Orange (which I've always used
for about 5 years with various phones) to a P800 on Orange
or O2.
I can get a much better handset price (without going on to
a very expensive talk plan) on O2's 250 crossnet + 50 sms
tariff than I can get on an orange equivalent tariff. So for
the first time I might not be on Orange.
I'd appreciate it if ppl could give me some advice on being
on O2.
- With orange at the moment I can pick up email and use WAP
through orange network numbers that are included in my talk
plan minutes, is this also true on O2?
- As O2 is an GSM 900 network is the call quality worse than the
1800 GSM network? I read online that O2 is a 900/1800 network
now. Does this mean that the network is capable of both, and if the
phone is dual band/tri band (like the P800) will it use GSM 1800
if its there?
- What are GPRS costs like on O2, i saw on their website that MMS
messages cost 35p. Whats the cost of other usage, like surfing the
net? Is there any extra monthly line rental costs for it, etc?
Thanks in advance...

I was in a similar situation (T68 on Orange). I picked up a P800 on new contract from www.mobiles.co.uk for £150. I put the old SIM on Virgin Tariff to stop billing, put my new number on the answer phone message, set all calls to be routed to voicemail, removed the SIM and sold the phone. |

if you use o2 bolt-ons you can get the cost of txt down to 4p each and Media Messages down to 16p each
I have been with o2 payasyougo for 2 years and o2 contract for 2years and haven't had any bother with them.

I was on O2 with a Nokia communicator for some time. I didn't have any problems with the service, however O2 does not support HSCSD so I could only connect at 9600bps...
I switched to Orange when I bought my P800 and so far I've been very happy. I've not actually tried HSCSD yet - why use that when GPRS is there.
There were some problems (caused by O2) when I ported my voice and data numbers, and the Orange technical support was very good! (I've since read conflicting posts in this newsgroup so suppose it's down to the individual).
I think the Orange GPRS service is faster than O2 (maybe some other gurus can confirm this?). Something about 4.1 as opposed to O2's 2.1??? I've used VNC to remotely control a Windows PC in another country via GPRS - on O2 I couldn't do that with the Communicator. (I know it's not like for like as the P800 would still work with GPRS on O2, but I have no indication of the speed...
Hope this helps. |
