T610 - My comment after trying |

Today Sony Ericsson holds a roadshow and I get a chance to try the T610. I have decided to buy it since it is announced so I am really happy to have a chance to try it before I get one.
Here are my comments:
1. Buttons and joystick are okay for pressing, better than T68i but still not perfect and solid. However it is quite okay already.
2. Menu is faster than T68i, but not very very much. The response becomes acceptable now. But the access to Call List is still quite slow.
3. Call List is just same as the T68i's, which make me quite disappointed. It takes some time to load the call list. Also Sony Ericsson did not make use of the new softkey user interface to enhance and improve the call list. Users still need to wait the phone to "move" in order to get the info (date/time/number) of the calls, although the speed to "move" is faster. Anyway, I had a very little time so I cannot test it deeply, maybe there is something more and better.
4. The screen is quite good. The backlight is okay but not very bright. Under sunlight, I cannot read the screen very clearly. The desktop of the phone with original theme is not so pretty making me a feel that the screen has low quality. Yet, the wallpaper shows that the screen is quite good. The words shown in the screen are very clear and solid, which I am really impressed.
5. I think the phone is small and light when I am holding it, even smaller than my T68i. But for me, there is not much metallic feeling.
6. Polyphonic ringing tone is okay in volume, but not as loud as Samsung's models. The roadshow is held in a very noisy enviroment, but the ringing tone can still be heard clearly when I was holding it or even using my hand to block the speaker (earphone). I think the volume is similar with the T310's. But the quality of the ringing tone is not impressive in my opinion.
7. The speed of loading a mophun game is acceptable. (I tried MiniGolf). Yet I haven't tried the Java as the things inside are not attractive to me to waste time in this little rare chance.
8. Status menu does not show the estimated remaining standby time and talk time.
9. The default screen saver is quite cool and pretty. The "clock" in the display sleep has a different font when compare with older models. But I think Sony Ericsson can make something special in the display sleep, for instance, give user the chances to set a black and white picture during standby time, or showing how many missed calls or unread messages.
10. This is the most disappointing point for me and for many many users I suppose. The memory allocation system is poor! Many people claim that 2MB is not enough for users to store things including Java programmes, Mophun games, Screen Saver, Polyphonic ringing tone, Pictures, Photos taken by built-in camera, Photos for Picture Phonebook, etc. Yes, I agree this point. But after trying............ I am much much more disappointed. Suppose we use 1.5MB to store other stuffs (like ringtones and Java), then there will be ~500KB for us to store pictures. If I can store 50 10KB photos, it is acceptable. However, in the T610, a ~15KB photo taken by the built-in camera will count around 50KB (YES!!! around 50KB!!! nearly four times more!) That means I can just store 10 photos with 500KB memory..... What the hxll!!! That means the memory allocation problem in T68i is still exist................... Also, don't forget there must be many default stuffs that use the 2MB memory that cannot be deleted (One theme takes about 50KB already, but the phone has about four. Also, there are many default wallpapers. Estimate yourself how many things can we save to the phone...........). I am really really disappointed about this.
After realizing the last point, I have turned to consider buying other phones like P800 or SX1. It is really difficult for me to accept such poor memory allocation and so little memory space for users to store things. Hope the default stuffs do not use so much memory so users can store more things they like. (But the T610 I tried just has 500KB left for users, with one photo taken by built-in camera, ~4 Java programmes, ~5 Mophun games and other default ringing tones and photos.)

I think you are mistaken. A normal default T610 would USE 510 kb approx and we would get 1.5 mb to store the other data. |

I'm sorry if the memory left for users I remeber is incorrect. The T610 I tried has one photo taken by built-in camera, about four Java programmes, about five Mophun games, and other default themes, photos and ringing tones (no other new ringing tones and new photos saved by users). |

Hi doctabako,
sorry I haven't tried it as there are too many people in the roadshow and I cannot try it deeply. |

Hi caff, in the road show, there is one red dummy T610 and one blue dummy T610. I cannot comment on the colours as they are just dummy which is not 100% same as the real one even the colour.
Also, we cannot see the front cover of the blue one. We can just see the back of it in front of the windows display.
Personally, I like: Sliver > Blue > Red
(But the sliver one hasn't much metallic feel in my opinion, quite big "plastic feel") |

I know only the bottom half and the battery cover are made of aluminum ! So is the top black part easy to get fingerprints on ?? So how's the UI in general , nice ??

For the fingerprint......... yes. But it does not affect the screen quality much.
UI............. Just some change and adjustments in key position and it uses "softkey". It is more convenient than T68i and quite nice. |

Do you mean a 352x288 pixels picture is 50KB? I can't believe this...
Whith my Samsung V200 I can take similar pics and they are around 21KB maximum and smaller are around 11KB (depends of numbers of colors, etc.) |

Why does SE keep on giving us their preloaded junk?? If this stuff can't be deleted then 2mb is definitely not enough..... |

Hi goldorak,
I cannot believe it as well........ I was shocked....
A 352x288 photo taken by the camera is about 10 - 15KB in size.
But as the memory allocation is so ____ (a fill in the blank question, according to personal value judegement), a 15KB 65536 colours photo takes up around 50KB in the phone memory..........
That means, when you send the photo out, the receiver just receives a ~15KB photo. Yet, in the T610 memory, it takes up ~50KB. It is not just the case of photos taken by the built-in camera, but also all photos and screen savers sent to the phone from PC.
Hi DragonEye,
I don't know can we delete predefined items as I haven't tried. And I am not so sure how many memory the predefined items take up in the phone memory. But as I have seen, without many self-defined items, the memory left is just 300KB - 500KB. Again, I'm not sure about it and hope some people can test it.

Oh my god... 50KB per pic in memory. No No!!!!!!

Please could you try to save pics on your T610 and confirm this????
To djk,
I think I will not buy the T610 and stay with my V200 until the Siemens SX1 will be out. I don't want to spend more than 500Euros for a non-perfect phone!!!
