All my mp3s are encoded at 128 kbps.

I find that my ears can not tell the difference between 128 and say 192 or even higher.

If you are reading this and CAN hear the difference and find 128 contains annoying artifacts etc then this post will not interest you.

I have just encoded a cd with Musicmatch using the mp3pro which now comes with 7.5 version

I copied some mp3pro encoded tracks to the P800 and for me I cant tell the difference beteen 128 kbps mp3 and 64 kbps mp3pro on the P800

This is excellent news as I can now fit 5 cds on a memory 128 duo.

I tried encoding an mp3 and I can tell the difference so i need the original cds to do this.

I also notice a big diffence in quality with my Koss portapro headphones to in-ear ones.

Although, I find the Sony headphones that came with the P800 better than most in-ear ones, I just wish they folded up smaller, to fit more easily into a wallet etc

Iam getting a 2.5 adapter put on an in-line volume control so I can use 3.5 headphones.

Overall I find the Mp3 player on the P800 is VERY GOOD

I think that a cd is 128 bit/s. Ripping it higher is just a waste of space.

A cd is uncompressed PCM audio data (16bits resolution 44.1 kHz sampling frequency, two descrete channels) at 1440 kbps ( 1 x CD = 150 kB/s, that is how fast a cd player needs to read the disc to be able to play audio from it in realtime)

128 kbps is just about one twelfth of the incompressed CD audio, and 64 kbps is 1/24!

If the P800 plays mp3pro this is fantastic news, personally i vote for OGG Vorbis.

If someone blindfolded me and played a song first using 128kb mp3 and then the original cd. I doubt I'd be able to pick them out. I could perhaps hear a difference but which one is better I'd have a problem deciding.

But then. Some people can't stand mp3s below 192kb. I've seen people on this forum saying that mp3s are downright unacceptable.

for playing in a car or bar (where there's a lot of background noise) 128kbps is fine

if using headphones to listen, I do not suggest 128kbps, hi tones are way too deformed (eh hihats or high voices sound a bit like a flange effect was added)

everything also depends of the encoder&ripper, some CDs I heard ripped on the net were just encoded with a laughable bad encoder, even in 192kbps it sounded like crap, clipping noise etc etc. I have some 128kbps ones which were encoded with some professional software at the recording studio itself, which sound damn crystal clear

since P800 is not for playing in a car or bar but headphone specific, I'd suggest to go for 160kbps, but since space is an issue with the P800, I'd go for 80kbps MP3PRO, although the phone itself can't play correctly MP3PRO, it will just play the MP3 part and 'forget' the specific MP3PRO part that 'predicts' high frequencies. 80kbps MP3PRO without MP3PRO decoding sounds still lotsa better than ordinary MP3 at same kbps! Weird but true...

Only portable (walkman) device I know of which does MP3PRO decoding is the Thomson Lyra 28x0 (so naturally I have one )

I find 128 kbps with headphones sound fantastic in a silent room

Everyones ears are different (as we all know) so I urge anyone who is new to mp3 to try 128 kbps and compare to a higher rate.

If you can't tell the difference (like me & many others) use 128 kbps.

Try EAC & Lame but dont think Musicmatch is useless just because a lot of people thinks its cool to slag it off

MAKE YOUR OWN MIND UP (let YOUR ears deside)

As I said in my original post -

If you are reading this and CAN hear the difference and find 128 contains annoying artifacts etc then this post will not interest you.

I said this because I didn't want the tread to become a..............

Well it is up to every one how good they want the music. But I made the mp3 as low as 8 mbs. I am no musician so it is almost as good Anyway I listen to it outdoors where there is much background noise like when a bus goes by you can not hear anything at all be it 128 or more. And I can put more mp3 on the stick.
What I really miss more is the lack of radio. This messing with mp3 is sometimes really time consuming. Changing the content of the stick so that you do not have to hear the same music all over again.
But of course my demands are not so big either.
