I just phoned the sonyericsson helpdesk and was told that the R2D software is available to all service centres from the 16th for download. My nearest service centre is Commtech in martham, england and he told me that if they dont have the current software it can be downloaded by them from the sonyericsson website. This update is FREE as long as the phone is within warranty and you can provide a proof of purchase. He had a list of all the new features the new software has so if you want to know ring the sonyericsson helpdesk on 08705 237237. |

Does this also mean that you need to have bought it from the SAME retailer because I bought it online... but I have proof of purchase and the phone is new ? Only bought it a month ago... so is that still under warranty as standard I take it ? Free even at carphone warehouse ? |

I went to my service centre, and all they told me is "what's your name and phone number?"

no mate, any official sonyericsson service point should do the upgrade for free, as long as you have a proof of purchase from anywhere

only SE retailer ?
What about the orange shop ?
I recon that if I take my phone to upgrade, the probably think that I am trying to be flashy or something |

I got it from today!
It didn't wanna reflash using the USB update method (phone refused to reflash), so the service center had to use the RS232 method (serial/COM)
Phone: CXC162002 R2D
Bluetooth: CXC12529 R5A
Organiser: CXC162001 R2A16
CDA: CDA162001/2 R3A12
currently playing around with it, some new stuff, but all already from R2A I guess...
Will put up snapshots using SCAP from setup menus if anyone is interested.
Ask questions if you wanna know if some things you wanted are in.
to anticipate some questions:
No birthday type of entry in the calendar.
No SMS folders either. (SMS system is similar to old one)
SMS DELIVERY REPORT (yahoo, it's a bit hidden, see the attachement tab when writing an SMS, it gives you a TO: field and Delivery Report (defaulted to Off, dunno if you can make it default ON)
I did notice the games have been updated, cardgame is now Solitaire (nicely done, with big cards and a hand moving them) and the chessgame has an extra view (smaller board, with clocks)
Phonebook system is similar to old one.
progress bar has been sped up dramatically for some network functions.
preferred network list remains intact after reflash
HA! The annoying thing while categorizing your phonebook has been solved that once you change the category of the entry, you won't jump back to 'all' but to the last category (where the entry was coming from) GOOD!
preferences has now a TTY Accessory menu (text phone?)
battery was till upto 75% after reflashing (needs to be 100% they say)
you do need to provide MS Duo for update, no sim or phonelock code necessary either.
internet has a lot more options (cache settings etc)
communicam has also a lot more new options and thumbnail browser
pictureviewer has also some enhancements (zoom)
indeed video widescreen is a bit sloppy (even with new media buffer custom settings to MAX)
resync to repopulate data also worked with older 1.1.3, but now I've upgraded to 1.1.4 anyway.
could you select layout of virtual keyboard? If not, now there are at least 25 to choose from!
I dunno how many formats audio player accepted before, now it has 7: MP3, AMR, RMF, AU, WAV, MIDI, iMelody + 'Other'
snaps coming soon! |

Just to confirm latest firmware for phone is R2D.
Took mine first to Intec in Barnet, London.
They could not upgrade it, but somehow they upgraded it from R1B to R1D. They wanted to send to SE for repair. I refused. Got it back.
Took it this afternoon to R's Electrics in Tottenham High Road.
They updated it in less than 2 hours, no problem. No Charge.
Pleased with updates although PC Suite 1.3.1 would not restore data.
Downloaded 1.4.2, still would not update. So i've reinstalled everything again. Just have to wait for 128Mb Duo card next.

What's the battery life like? Did SE make any improvements to power consumption? |
