well no, if it encodes it on the fly then it will be the same as having low quality mp4's on your p800... and that doesn't take up all the room untill you have like an hour of footage on there.

If it is the same as the 7650 and 3650 software, you can record quite a lot!! It's a bout 10 Kbytes/sec. That means more than 3 hours on a 128 Mb Msd!!!

when people quote "very soon" with such authority, does anyone at all have any information about which company is developing it?

I haven't seen any proof at all.

@Andy, AFAIK, it will be releasing the video recording app... sometime before June (They said around April, but I'm NOT holding my breath)

So it should be a free tool right?

About performance:
I'm not so sure that p800 is capable of encoding the video on-the-fly. Did you notice how long does it to save a picture taken by the camera, now imagine +- 10 pictures a sec. (and that's shitty quality). I know it depends on the image size and quality but... if the image quality is low i'll be really disappointed, not that i'm expecting too much. Oh well, let's just wait... [addsig]

well the only video clips i've seen on a phone are on the 7650 and it looks pretty shit on that, i'm hoping for a bit better! And it should be able to encode on the fly...

The CPU and camera are definitely not the bottlenecks here. It's the access speed for the MS Duo.

However, if they record to memory and use buffering in the background to transfer the data to the MS Duo, it should be quick enough to work.

I think Sony Ericsson is planning to add the video recording application.
Here is a note from their internal documentation:
KIS-47067 - Added support for ACPU system tick to support video recording.
