What's the point of these little user icons of phones, that are different brightnesses? I see it coresponds to number of posts, but it adds little benefit to the forum user. Why don't you just have user uploadable Avatars?

So you can put a 800x600 avatar???
So everyone has a different avatar???
just imagine if an 800x600 avatar would take 5 secs to load, and there are 20 different posts in one page: 20x5 = eternity.
(now, the culculus is the same for smaller avatars)
This way there are 4 or 5 different small avatars (since the images are cached) taking much less time.
One more question. How can personalized avatars give you any beneffit?

Most sites limit the size of it to something like 80x80 and also have a limit on the size in KB. So your 800x600 issue is not valid.
Also, your user profile would have an option not to show avatars at all.

I makes it easier to see who posted what, when you have a quick scan through, also it adds more of a comminity feel to the forum.
There is even less reason for the current icons, there serve no point at all. The number of posts is there anyway.

Not only the image size that matters.
Imagine laffen having a database with almost 17000 different images to handle, this would definitely slow down the website.
I think there's no use in having avatar's, period.

I agree. The phone avatars are just find the way they are. I like to know what type of phone a person is using when i communicate with em... They also don't need to take the time to explain what type of phone they are using.

Rubbish. Is it hosted on a 286 with 1GB harddisk? I think not. My-Symbian.com, for example, supports avatars and is not slow, and I could mention lots more sites with far more post than here.

If you didn't want to see them then you wouldn't need to!
Just because you don't want something, doesn't mean noone else whould have it either, especially when it could be setup so you saw no difference.
