Talked to them today, they will have 64Mb in stock next Wednesday (for the first time in ages). Most of them will probably go on pre-orders. There is STILL no due date for the 128Mb.
Sony really need to pull their finger out on this one. The main reason I bought the P800 was for MP3 playback during long journeys, and it p****s me off having to listen to the same 4 songs round and round on my 16Mb stick.
To be honest, it's getting to the stage where I would seriously think about buying another Sony/Ericsson phone after this carry on.
I may just get two 64Mb cards and swap them about. We could wait Forever to get the larger ones. The phone has been out in some countries for ages, It's bull***t that they can't support their products with available accessories.

WHy don't you try encoding your MP3s at a lower bitrate so that the file sizes end up smaller? |

Because I'm a DJ, and all my 4,500 files are coded to 128Kps. It's too much of a p**s about to re-encode the songs I want to listen to.
And, they sound like crap at lower than 128Kps. The quality of the headphones shows a noticeable difference even if taken down to 96Kps

even 128 sounds rubbish i think. I get stressed out listening to mp3's full stop because they sound so trashy compared to cd master copies. If I have to listen to mp3's it has to be atleast 192 otherwise I get more stress from the lack of quality than enjoyment from the music!

If you want to get a lower bitrate than 128, then try mono. Of course, it won't sound the same, but it sounds a lot better than 96kbps stereo. Also, you can reencode multiple files at once using dbPowerAmp Music Converter

Very handy and free!

I TOTALLY AGREE!!! Anything lower than 192 sounds bad. I can stand to listen to 128kbps mp3s ONLY if it's a song I really really like, and can't find any other bitrate version of it & listening to it from my home stereo system... over headphones... forget it. 128kbps flaws shine like the sun over headphones. At least over my home audio system, I can kinda hide it with a little DSP. |

You must be sound perfectionists. I find the music fine at 96kbs & not that different to 128kbs. Above that I can't tell the difference!
I can cope with 56kps with wma format music. |

psikey,
I can hear audio artifacts at 128Kbps. You don't have to be a perfectionist. Still, if it's on a train or on a bus, or on a flight, the background noise is louder than the artifacts.
Anyway, I think this an absolutely wrong tool for DJs to listen to music.
I think that kind of person, with a large audio libary, needs a dedicated 20G device where all their songs are located. Not a phone, even with 128M of memory. The P800 is more like a casual listening unit, that you would use if you find yourself bored somewhere... |

It is all very subjective, just like the quality of the headphones.
Many are happy with the supplied headphone, many say they are craps.
Do you use the supplied headphone or do you use something else?

I use a pair of amazing gold plated Sony headphone with volume control. They are the standard headphone size and I have a convertor that lets it fit into my P800. I don't think I can ever listen to the supplied headphones again after using these ones with the convertor. Huge difference and I am one of those 'sound perfectionists'

man your ear is sensetive
I sometimes play songs that are 64 or even 38, Normall songs sound fine but if the song is metal/ rock then you need something like 96 --> 128
I usually try to shrink songs to about 1.5 mb

I'm working on making a totally new headset for my P800 using nicer headphones.
Although I realized that the Audio player on the P800 really isn't that good.... even with my 192kbps mp3s. I think I'll just use my P800 for movies and recorded TV shows... and stick with my Minidisc for music. |

I suppose some people are perfectionists, however, I have used MP3's to play my music for 3 years now using BPM Studio. I play in several large nightclubs, and have a top of the range Peavey system for my mobile gigs. I personally think there is no great quality loss encoding at 128Kps. I have played MP3 then CD on my rig and there is no discernable difference.
People who complain about MP3 should just avoid it. I can't, as to put my whole collection on a hard drive at CD quality it would need to be 155Gb in size. Try fitting that in a laptop !!
In all seriousness, it's a PHONE, what quality do you expect !!

This guy is working on an OGG/MP3 player which has many more features than the standard player that comes with the phone. He's going to be selling it for aroun $15 on Handango. I emailed him a couple of weeks ago and he was quite close to finishing it... Screenshots look quite good.

Ogg format gives similar quality to MP3 but with much better compression ratios. That might even let you fit (wow) 6 files on a 16MB card...
On another note AV-Land - http://www.avland.co.uk/sony/msgm128/index.htm - reckon they'll have 128MB Duo sticks in 2 weeks. I've placed an order so will keep you informed, but given what I've heard from other suppliers both in the UK and elsewhere I'm not going to hold them to that date!
