As of 5pm today, SonyEricsson were drawing up plans for upgrading the T68 to the T68i to the point that only the case will vary. This is David Chow's post on the What Mobile forums:
'Well the good news is that you will be able to upgrade your T68's to 'i spec' software. However the not so good news is there may be a charge involved as the process isn't a five minute EPROM flash job. The after sales guys haven't finalised the procedure, yet, as the T68i hasn't had it's final software build.'
So, if you're being offered an upgrade to R1D software tommorow, great, but it ain't the final release software - its probably one of the intermediary test versions. The fact that they'll charge for the release upgrade is annoying, but it seems as though the upgrade is more than just a software flash - perhaps a RAM upgrade too?
And Laffen, it says that writing the topic as 'Upgrading from T68 to T68i - Ericsson's Official Line' is illegal' - can you sort that out? Its not capitalised.

I spoke to ericsson service centre today and they said all software upgrades will be free of charge for the T68 (or any Ericsson phone)in warranty period anyway.
They said my local service point now have the equipment to do the upgrade, but when I phoned them they said they had the hardware but have had no training in its use yet!! |

I've done a exception for you.

A true Scandinavian gentleman.
The comments I quoted are straight from SE's UK headquarters, where David was today testing the T68i, Z700 and P800. I imagine the service centres will be given a different line for customers when they've sorted the software out fully. |

I'd doubt it... the cost would be unjustifiable. Theres no date set, because the software isn't finished. Also bear in mind that this is for UK phones only... there are probably free upgrades for the rest of Europe. |

ARG!
So there will be a hardware update too? Then I have to send the freaking phone in to some shop, and they have to open it up to make it more T68i'sh.
The hardware update is probably not a 5 minute job.
I don't like this, not at all. |

I live in Copenhagen, Denmark - and I can assure you that I will get the MMS upgrade for FREE - that has been promised me by Ericsson.
(provided it within the first year - and I don't expect to wait another 6 monts for the upgrade)
I don't care if they need to do a surgical operation on my T68m or whatever to do the upgrade - I'll pay them ZIP.
Kind regards Claus |

Of course we wont pay for this. Its been promised right from the beginning
It wouldnt be very smart by to charge for this upgrade,..think people will be very....ehhh angry, to put it mildly.
But if its true that this upcoming mms-upgrade, whatever its called, is only temporary/not the final version, one might just wanna wait with the upgrade, untill the "real one" comes along.
I'll call my service point tomorrow, just to get some info

Well...it would not be very smart to charge for an upgrade with the MMS functionality...I mean this (MMS) has to be a sucess in order to drive roll out of 3G.
Charge for MMS upgrade = very few users of MMS = very angry operators not geting revenues from MMS = having no money (or incentive) to invest in 3G...
Upgrade for free!!!!
Cheers

To be honest, UK users are so used to having to pay additional charges on their phones that they won't think twice about shelling out another, say, £30 to get the T68i functionality. Thats their reasoning, at any rate. |

I've been charged SEK 145 twice for upgrading T68s! Both times because it meant changing languages also (did it on two different phones) I will not accept paying for this upgrade. Nor will you I'm sure
