WAP 2.0 problems on latest T68i |

Hi.
I'm working on a conversion for my existing WAP portal to make it compatible with WAP 2.0. I'm not really sure what I'm doing yet as there's not as many pointers as there were when I started with WML.
I used CSS within the HTML file itself and it works fine on my T68i with the R6 software. However when I remove the CSS info, put it in a separate file and link to it, it goes wrong.
Does the T68 not support this, or am I doing something wrong?
In my humble opinion the whole concept of XHTML MP seems a bit botched, especially compatibility-wise, but time will tell...
Thanks!
Rob

Yes, on linked CSS some tags work better than others.
The colour background and text appears to work.
I still cannot get the "marquee" tag to work.
Lets hope SE get it right next time.
Cheers

See, when I try your site on my mobile (O2 gateway via GPRS) it doesn't load - I get an error.
Try putting the contents of the CSS file in the HTML for improved compatibility.
The thing that gets me is they [the manufacturers] are basically saying 'Well really, don't use the fancy elements of XHTML because they won't be fully compatible', but this defeats the whole point of it!
Mine's work in progress, and little progress yet, at http://beta.wapocalypse.com - I hope to build an improved copy of my current (and surprisingly successful ) WML portal. |

Couldn't agree more, what is the point?
Who wants coloured text? hardly the top request for an improved surfing experience, you can have coloured pics, and different font types with 1.1wml, it's content and compatability that will drive new services, even now these morons couldn't agree on a standard if their lives depended on it.
The biggest problem is hundreds of different gateways specs, and hundreds of different screen sizes, display memory on phones, some show animated gif while surfing, some show jpgs, others don't, a T68 downloads a file to memory , most display it, you can download a large gif into the T68 memory ,but it won't show it while surfing. The whole things a fookin joke, so what do they do, bring out wap 2.0?? |

Absolutely!
I made a PHP script which looks not only at the accepts but the user agent (that's one bit of info that fortunately is available on whichever gateway) and returns what type (wbmp only, jpeg, gif) of picture the device can handle. That's useful to automatically give people the right pictures.
It basically runs by looking at the accept to see if it should be handling those types, but then uses various exceptions and inclusions depending on the device. Nokia's the worst offender.
It's only of use in a WML context because you'd expect all the WAP2 devices to at least do colour GIFs.
That's based on research over a few months. You can have a copy of it if you like for yours?
I also did the same for maximum deck sizes because my forum system automatically gives out the right amount of text to avoid 'Too much data' errors. Again, if it's any use let me know |

OK, I'm starting to get somewhere with it. http://beta.wapocalypse.com now has three pages on it.
They don't have much functionality yet, i.e. submitting the sign-up form or attempting to log in with an account doesn't take you anywhere because it's not done yet, but the stuff so far gives you an idea of what you can achieve with it.
I've had a few site members test it today but they're all on similar setups. If anyone could have a look at this and test it, I'd be very appreciative. Colour WAP is well worth the £25 it cost me to upgrade my software! ("A Nova Digicom" in Warrington) |

@Wapocalypse
Disappointed to hear you cannot access my wapsite,
it was tested OK on my T68i R5D007. If you have
the latest software I don't understand why it didn't
work for you.
Do you think the problem is with wap gateway?
BTW your beta wapsite works fine on my phone.
Cheers

Not sure... try this:
http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=www.goodan.com.au/wap2
and there's some problem with it. That's what I use to make sure mine works.
I've found something REALLY ANNOYING about the T68 - there seems to be no way to replace the WML <timer> element.
Using raw headers, or the recommended <meta> tag simply doesn't work. This means that my chat pages can't be refreshed automatically - a major inconvenience - as well as on the other occasions where I wanted it. Not happy about that at all!
Of course if anyone can find a way around it, then please, let me know ASAP! |
