i have a t68i with voicestream SIM card in it, and i am looking for a p800 new on ebay but ive seen this several times

SIM FREE ("never locked" "off line")
This phone is direct from the factory and has never been locked to a network. This phone is less likely to develop problems than a phone that has been hacked into (as many ebay phones are) to remove a network lock.

what does this mean? does "not locked" mean ANY sim card will work in it? If I ordered a phone from sony ericsson, would it be locked or unlocked? what is locking?

thanks

it means that a certain provider has put a code for the fone to accept only their sim cards. locking and unlocking as in provider locked does not tamper with the software anyway. its just a nicer way of saying like well my fone is made in sweeden while yours in malaysia so it is better. sometimes though behind locking there is also upgraded software and changed imei illegaly. but, in the bottomline, if you take a fone from a provider u dont change the software if u unlock it. (u might loose the warranty though) in most cases buying a simlocked fone is much cheaper than buying a simfree one, so it pays of to unlockit
