how to half the size of your mp3's. |

just read on another forum that the p800 can read the mp3pro codec and supports the audio format in its audio player. mp3pro can half the size of an mp3 yet retain the quality. so in theory you could store an album to msduo.
50 cent - in da club.mp3=4.59mb
50 cent - in da club .mp3(pro)=1.70mb
havent tried it yet myself.
let me know.
also can anyone post anything they know about amr and au, the other formats that the p800 supports.

If you are converting to MP3PRO just to listen on your P800 (not to convert back to CD audio) then you can wind the MP3PRO quality all the way down to about 64kps this is still fine on the P800 and you get even more space with hardly any quality difference.

Does the P800 actually support mp3pro. Sure it can play them but so can any standard mp3 player. Does it actually support the mp3pro features? |

Yes it does (at least I think so) ... I tried it and yes, MP3pro sounds better than standard mp3s...but not by much... lowering it down to 64kbps sounds like a 96kbps mp3... it sounds better... but not good either way.
I can only stand 192kbps mp3s... so in mp3pro, I can only stand to listen to 128kbps...so not much difference in size.
I can wait for the 128MB Duo.. I don't have time to re-encode all my MP3s to mp3pro. |

I tested encoding MP3's under 3 different settings - 128, 96 and 64, and found no discernable difference in sound quality when listening on headphones.... so am using 64 kpbs for all my MP3s now... just need that 128MB storage card to come out!....

Does it just lower the kbps or does it use new tech to improve the quality of the lower encoded songs

I downloaded this put it says it can't accept encoding actual mp3's, just wav files. |

yeh you have to decode to wav then encode back to mp3, seems a bit of a pain but then again you cant exactly fit many mp3's on your p800 anyway, unless i am missing something? |

mp3PRO use is correct... I use Nero and Musicmatch software which both support "mp3PRO" as opposed to regular "mp3", with mp3PRO you can have a file with the bitrate of 80kbps which is equal to a regular mp3 file at 128kbps but the file size is about 38% smaller, so you can fit more songs in the same space, you can also go lower in bitrate with only a slight degredation in quality as opposed to regular mp3. Now if you have regular mp3's musicmatch pro supports file conversion, so you can convert your regular mp3's with ease... It just Kicks ass!!! So give it a try...

Can't agree more!!
64Kb/s Stereo Ogg is just as good as 128 Kb/s MP3
The Ogg Player is far, far superior to SE's very poor attempt at a media player that comes with the phone.
Ogg all the way .......
