I got thinking from a programmers perspective how it would be possible for people to recieve short video clips even if their phone didn't support MP4 playback.

So i figured that by optimizing a .gif it would be possible to send short video clips...

Here is what i tried, i got a 10 second long video clip from the internet and changed the resolution down to 160x120, i then converted it back to compressed avi and then i extracted and optimized each frame om the gif using a small program i developed (which does this quickly). I then converted all the optimized frames into a single animated .gif which ran at 15fps, obviously i had to leave out sound simply because it can only be WAV in MMS, and that would be a large sound file!

Anyway i sent it to my P800 and viewed it on the phone, the results were good, because i normalized each frame the quailty seemed sharp enough to be watchable.

The small .gif was just over 900k (still a little big, but the smallest i can get the .gif and still be watchable). It does take time to cache it before it playsback smoothly, but that is just something that cant be avoided.)

I dont know if their really is point in developing this further? i could turn all this complex stuff into one single easy to use app, but the .gifs are still going to be pretty big...

another solution would be to convert each frame of the avi to jpeg (which are better looking and more compressed than gif) and automatically generate an MMS Script based on these frames (again a custom programming job...).

I would need to look up the specs for MMS...

But using the jpeg method (creating a 'page' for each frame with a delay of 0.1) and the frame files only take up 200k.

I will only look into this if their really is intrest, seems a bit long winded...but its possible at least

Sounds like a great idea to me. Always nice to hear people are developing new things. I say go for it :-D
