Opera Works on Cingular GRPS!! West Coast!

O.K. - after fidigiting to no end I have found a way to get Opera to work on GPRS over the Cingular network on the west coast. I will list the settings below but have a few introductory remarks. First, make sure that Cingular has set your up correctly to receive GRPS. That means you not only have to sign up for “Wireless Internet Express” ($6.99 a month), and register at http://www.mywirelesswindow.com , but makesure whomever you talk to at Cingular customer service (1-800-331-0500 x1) is familiar with GPRS and that they set up your DNS and Gateway correctly for that account. (They did not do it correctly the first time I set it up). I signed up for the unlimited GPRS for $59.00 a month and will taper down to a lower cost plan once I view a months worth of usage. There is no setup fee and no term contract. That being said I used a combination of the information found at http://alliance.cingularinteractive.com/dev/cda/home (specifically the document in downloads titled “Cingular Wireless Device and Software Settings”) coupled with the information found at http://www.pbase.com/woedee/cingular_gprs_settings to come up with the following settings which have worked for me.

The Steps:
(note – from here on out everything IS case sensitive!!)

Setting up GPRS

go to “control pannel” then to the “connections tab” then to “internet accounts”.
There all I found listed was GPRS
click on “new”
account name: ISP.CINGULAR GPRS
connection type: GPRS
click on “advanced”
under the “server” tab enter the following information:
check the “User name and password required” box
User name: ISPDA@CINGULARGPRS.COM
(note – just an FYI – DA after the ISP means Data Acceleration which supposedly doubles download speeds to approx 48K bps)
Password: CINGULAR1
Address: isp.cingular (all lower case!)
all other settings left at default (IP address is automatic, sect.)
Click “done” and “done” to get back to the main “internet accounts” page. There you should now see ISP.CINGULAR.GPRS listed.

Now lets set up a WAP GPRS account.

click on “new”
account name: WAP.CINGULAR
connection type: GPRS
click on “advanced”
under the “server” tab make the following changes:
User name: TCRESDC5RFDX@W3.MYCINGULAR.COM
Password: ZJULDAGEN98810
Address: isp.cingular
Click “done” and “done” to get back to the main “internet accounts” page. There you should now see WAP.CINGULAR listed.

Now, for those times GPRS is down, lets set up the CSD or GSM dial-up account.
*(note- the difference between CSD and GSM is that CSD a.k.a. TDMA is a 9.6kbps network and GSM is a 14.4 kbps network).

click on “new”
Account name: ISP.CINGULAR CSD (or GSM)
connection type: Dial-up
User name: ISPDA@CINGULAR.COM
Password: CINGULAR1
Phone number: 18472549271 (GSM = 14152441012)
Click on the “advanced” tab
under the “login tab” change the following
uncheck the “Get IP address automatically” box
Type: Ipv4
IP address: 66.209.11.61
under the “speed” tab make the following changes
Connection Type: ISDN
Enable high speed: checked
Requested Speed: 9.6kbps (14.4 kbps for GSM)
Click “done” and “done” to get back to the main “internet accounts” page. There you should now see ISP.CINGULAR.CSD (or GSM) listed.

Finally, make sure the “Show Connection Dialog” box is checked in the main “Internet Accounts” window.

Now for the trick to get Opera working on the P800 over the Cingular GPRS network.
Go to the regular internet browser provided by Sony Ericsson on the P800 (the second icon from the right on the top of the screen). Log onto one of the links provided – SE or SE P800 (these are WAP links). When the logon dialog appears, choose ISP.CINGULAR GPRS. You should see a planet icon appear on the bottom of the screen in the tool bar right of the voicemail icon. This planet icon will have brackets flashing from the sides while connecting. Once the page has loaded, go and load Opear and opena web page (I chose Google because it loads fast). Choose the ISP.CINGULAR GPRS option again when the dialog box opens again. You should connect without a problem.
Also, I noticed that you can't be on the phone (speaker phone) and surfing with GPRS at the same time – for those who wanted to know.

Good Luck!

umm ok. BTW: as of 3/20/03, Cingular will update user names and passwords for their Wireless Internet settings.

In effect since 2/19/03, Data Connect service provides Data Acceleration for all web and email download traffic. It provides higher effective network speed with throughput of approx. 60kbps via GPRS.

I've tried all of the P800 Cingular GPRS settings posted here on Esato and none of them work now. Has the username and passwords changed? Does anyone have updated information?

I do have Wireless Internet Express, but right now it is worthless... any help would be very welcome. Feel free to PM me.

there's only 2 known username and 2 passwords that are posted on the internet.

we're talking about the 'mywireless window' username and password and NOT the username and password on your phone settings.
