How do you free memory for larger apps such as MIB or stuff like that?

It seems to do the same as the SPV where it leaves all other applications running in the background.

At the moment if I am trying to run a large app I am having to restart the phone

Suggestions?

load a program like file manager which has a task manager that shows and allows you to close any programs that are open/running

install task switcher, it's a much better way of freeing memory than file manager (which is also a must-have on most phones!).
