GPRS always on & battery performance |

Hey all. I have an Nokia 7210. I've been setting up the phone and have the option between enabling GPRS to be always on or for it to connect only when needed. Its far faster with always on, and doesnt always establish a connection otherwise. What I want to know is does it affect battery life? Is so, by how much? Thanks in advance. |

You will certainly be reduced to virtual tears when you see the effect it has on your, already not overly-impressive, battery life. GPRS probably drains battery faster than any other function. Your 'conn when needed' should work properly, if not, try an SW upgrade.
You're gonna need to use it that way, or buy a few more mains chargers!

I see what you mean, but its not as if I am using GPRS to download constantly. I used to have it enabled constantly on my Ericsson T65 and I got 4-5 days battery life out of it. Why is the Nokia so bad? |

Not sure why the difference between Nokia and SE but if you think about it, downloading or not doens't make much difference, except to your phone bill! 
Having GPRS switched on permanently drains just like having bluetooth on constantly, even if you're not connected to a device.

OK I guess I better be switching it back to how it was then! I might give it a trial though, see how long it does really last. Thanks for the info. |

I've contacted Nokia regarding this power issue with GPRS, and they said: The Always On option on the Nokia 7210 does not mean that the connection is continually open. It registers you on the GPRS network, and a data connection is only opened when it is needed. Performance is faster because you are always registered to the GPRS network. Battery performance isn't affected by this option, though continual use of the GPRS feature (accessing sites and downloading content) does have an impact on battery life. |
